Conant loads up on big, talented players
Conant has traditionally been on the lighter side with its opponents.
But this year is a big exception to the rule. Just look at the right side anchored by junior Kenny Kalish (6-feet-5, 340 pounds) and senior Nathan Benedetti (5-11, 317).
"It's one of our bigger groups," said Conant coach Bill Modelski, whose other three starters are far from tiny at 232 to 245 pounds. "The right side is freakish.
"They're nice kids who have already been in the fire and have experience. Plus they've got some size and that's huge."
And the Cougars hope that leads to big things for senior Rico Prestia at quarterback.
"He's really improved his ability to throw the ball, especially the intermediate stuff," Modelski said. "He runs pretty well."
Kyle Klosowicz moves from slot receiver to running back and Michael Miller goes from offensive tackle to fullback, where he's an excellent blocker with good hands. Garrett Gatz leads the receiving corps and also starts at free safety.
Senior Otto Linderman returns for his third varsity season at inside linebacker and will also play tight end.
"He's a great leader and a great kid," Modelski said. "He's built like a stone and it's like hitting this wall."
The Cougars have experience in the line in their switch to a 50 front, which Modelski believes gives them a chance to win more battles up front. Sophomores John Maevski and Adam Starks are expected to make an immediate impact at outside linebacker.
Modelski has been pleasantly surprised by the return of senior strong safety Mike Lorenz after he didn't play last year.
"He can just play the game," Modelski said. "His coming back to us has been a bonus.
"We were real disappointed when he quit but he came back and did everything the right way and he's been awesome. He's one of the few success stories you have with that."
