New Dist. 88 board member:
Olga Flores has been named to the DuPage High School District 88 board, filling a vacancy resulting from the resignation of Paul Habel. Flores will be sworn in Aug. 24 and serve until the next election in April 2011. An Addison resident with two children, Flores brings experience from her participation in school and church events, fundraising for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life and volunteering for community programs.
Indian Lakes names chef:
Hilton Indian Lakes Resort in Bloomingdale has named Bradford Philips its executive chef. A graduate of the culinary arts program at Chicago's Kendall College, Philips also worked at nationally acclaimed Tru under Rick Tramonto. Most recently, he was executive chief at Saltaus in Chicago's West Loop, where he created a menu featuring global cuisine with Mediterranean and Asian influences.
Bloomingdale culture fest:
Bloomingdale Park District, Bloomingdale Library and the village will present Passport to the World from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Old Town Park, 111 Third St. The event will feature ethnic foods, cultural storytelling, traditional dances and music, piƱatas, crafts by Little India, henna art, international craft projects for kids, a bounce house and face painting. Police also will offer free child safety seat checks. Admission is free, but some food and activities require a fee. Glen Ellyn looks at tax area:
Two special service areas in Glen Ellyn are expected to be voted on by the village board Nov. 9 unless residents file an objection. The districts are for 2,200 unincorporated residents who are served by the Glen Ellyn Fire Department. The village is looking to institute a 25-cent tax per $100 equalized assessed valuation. A public hearing on the SSA's will be held on Aug. 24. After that, residents have 60 days to object by filing a petition of 51 percent of property owners and 51 percent of registered voters.
