Train station work to start:
Improvements to the Route 59 Metra station in Naperville will begin Tuesday, Aug. 11. Access to the train platform will be maintained at all times during construction; however, alternate pedestrian routes may be required on a temporary basis. The project is slated for completion in September. To accommodate construction, the main access road that runs parallel to the station platform will be temporarily closed. Winfield run on Saturday:
It's not too late for runners and walkers to participate in Saturday's 26th annual Winfield Run. Race day registration will be available at 6:45 a.m. for the event, which will include a 10K run, a 5K run/walk and a 1-mile run/walk. The run will start near Lions Park, located on Beecher Avenue two blocks west of Winfield Road, at 7:45 a.m. for the 1-mile race and 8 a.m. for the 5K and 10K races. The registration fee is $25.
Band washes cars to raise cash:
The Wheaton Warrenville South High School Tiger Marching Band will host a car wash from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the high school, which is located at the corner of Butterfield and Wiesbrook roads in Wheaton. Members of the band will wash cars for donations to help fund their fall competitive marching season. Saturday will be the band's final car wash of the summer.
All-night garage sale:
Wheaton Drama, Inc. is holding an all-night garage sale from 9 a.m. today to 4 p.m. Saturday at Playhouse 111, which is located at 111 N. Hale St. in downtown Wheaton. Admission is free. For more information, call Wheaton Drama at (630) 260-1820.
Park on social networks:
Naperville Park District is using several social networking sites to improve its communication with the community. The district introduced Park Talk, its blog site, earlier this year and is now running on Facebook, Flickr and LinkedIn. Those who would like to follow the park district using these vehicles can visit napervilleparks.org and clink on any of the links under the "follow us on" heading the right-hand side of the home page. The district plans to evaluate other social media options to increase its online presence.
Streets to close for triathlon:
Numerous streets in Naperville will be closed or have restricted parking in effect during the Naperville Sprint Triathlon on Sunday, Aug. 9. Race route streets will be closed from about 6 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and parking restrictions will be in place from about 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. on that day. Naperville celebrates pets:
Downtown Naperville has planned a weekend of shopping and dining specials combined with fun pet-friendly events for the whole family during with their first annual Dog Days of Summer event today, Aug. 7, to Sunday, Aug. 9. Participating merchants and restaurants are offering special sales and offers. Each day there will also be special events including a free movie night at 8:30 p.m. today at Central Park at Benton and Washington. The weekend will also include a pet walk and costume contest and free pet photo. Nearly 40 businesses will also allow well-behaved dogs on leashes into their stores with their masters.
