Grab your racket for Elgin tennis showdown

Local tennis players looking to test their skills against other people should register for the upcoming Elgin Open Showdown tennis singles tournament.

The tournament is open to men and women and there are levels available for beginning, intermediate and advanced players.

It will be held Aug. 8 at the six newly resurfaced courts on Judson University - they're blue and green, just like the ones you'll see at the US Open in New York, and are absolutely gorgeous.

It only costs $15 if you're an Elginite and $20 if you don't live here - the money guarantees you three, one-set matches in under four hours, which is quite a bargain.

The tournament is open to adults only, but officials will make exceptions for 17 year olds who think they have what it takes to take on the grown folks.

The deadline to register is 5 p.m. Aug. 6.

Organizers canceled the tournament last year due to a lack of interest and I hope that won't be the case this year.

You can register by visiting www.cityofelgin.org, in person at the Centre of Elgin or by mailing your entry to: Centre of Elgin, Attn: Elgin Tennis Showdown, 100 Symphony Way, Elgin, IL 60120.

For information, call Kone Chansey at (847) 289-2689 or e-mail him at chansey_k@cityofelgin.org.
