McHenry man dies after jumping into Fox Lake

James McKinley, 47, of McHenry, died Saturday night after he jumped into Fox Lake for a swim but couldn't make it back to his boat, authorities said.

An autopsy will be conducted Monday to determine if McKinley drowned or died from other causes, Lake County Coroner Richard Keller said.

McKinley had been boating with an unidentified woman around 9 p.m. Saturday on Fox Lake at the mouth of Squaw Creek, which is in the Ingleside area in unincorporated Lake County, according to Fox Lake Deputy Fire Chief Larry Van Hoorelbeke.

The boat was not anchored when he went into the water, and he could not reach the boat when he was done swimming, Van Hoorelbeke said.

Fox Lake, Antioch and Lake Villa firefighters and divers were called to the lake and found McKinley in about 2 feet of water at about 10:30 p.m.

No other details were available Sunday.
