Widows or Widowers: Widowed women and men of all ages are invited to attend a social gathering at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 18, at the Elks Lodge, 711 W. St. Charles Road, Elmhurst. Admission $5. Social gatherings are held on the third Thursday of each month. Johnny Gray, a local, multi-instrumental musician and singer, will highlight the evening. Plato HCE: The June meeting of the Plato Center Unit of the Kane County Home and Community Education will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, June 19 at the Burlington Park on Deutsch Road. It is the annual potluck luncheon and auction. The auctioneer is Marnie Wesemann. Bring donations for the auction. Altrusa Club: The Altrusa Club of Elgin will hold its popular annual garage sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, June 19, and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 20 at 940 Douglas Ave. in Elgin. Cary-Grove Jaycees: The Cary-Grove Jaycees presents Jaycees Cary Days Annual Car Show, sponsored by Wickstrom Auto Group, from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 20 at Lions Park, 1170 Silver Lake Road, north of Route 14 in Cary. Registration will be from 9 a.m. to noon. The classes of cars will be Antique, Corvette, Custom, with Special Interest Street Rods and Trucks. There also will be 1950s Stock and Modified, 1960s-'70's Stock and Modified; and 1980s Present Stock and Modified. The show will feature quality cars and trucks only. The car show is for the whole family and is free to spectators. Wristbands will be for sale for $20 for unlimited carnival rides from noon to 4 p.m. There will be many different food vendors available for your enjoyment and entertainment throughout the whole day. One hundred percent of the proceeds will benefit the Cary-Grove Jaycees. This show will be judged by National Corvette Restoration Society and Chevy Vettefest judges. Society for Creative Anachronism: The local Society for Creative Anachronism will resume its Elv Av Tiden fighter practice from 9:30 a.m. to noon Sunday, June 21 at Wing Park. Toastmasters: Do you want to improve your speaking skills. Need to be more confident on that interview or presentation. Fox Valley Bicycle and Ski Club: The club will host its 40th annual Swedish Days Ride on Sunday, June 28. The ride will begin and end at Howard B. Thomas Elementary School in Burlington. The meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia.
Mothers & More: Tara Tharpe, a motivational speaker, will help you to look at your own goals in a fun, inspirational way at the Mothers & More of McHenry County program titled, "Look in the Mirror and Guess Who I See. ME!" The event is scheduled from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, June 25, in the fellowship room at First Congregational Church of Crystal Lake, 461 Pierson St. Enter through the church office entrance on the Lake Street side of the building. South Elgin Lions: The South Elgin Lions Club will host its second annual "Cookin' On The Grill Summer Meat Spin" on Friday, June 26 at the club house, 500 Fulton St. in South Elgin. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the raffle starts at 7 p.m. Among the items to be raffled will be many favorite summer meats, including T-bone, Porterhouse, and New York Strip Steaks, Filet Mignon, Pork Chops, Salmon Filets, Lobster Tails, Baby Back Ribs. There will also be special Prime Rib raffles. One lucky loser will receive a Grill and a Coleman Extreme 62-quart Wheeled Cooler filed with various picnic items. Larkin Boosters: The Larkin High School Boosters will host its annual golf outing at 1 p.m. Friday, June 26 at the Highlands Golf Course, 875 Sports Way in Elgin. Elgin Junior Woman's Club: Elgin Junior Woman's Club is hosting its annual Treasured Gardens Garden Walk again this year. It will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 27 at the east side of Elgin. The starting location will be at the General offices of the Church of the Brethren, 1451 Dundee Ave., Elgin. Tickets will be $12 before the walk and $15 on the day of the event. United Commercial Travelers: The United Commercial Travelers-Elgin Council 412 will host their eighth annual spaghetti dinner and raffle from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 27, at 280 S. Melrose, Elgin. Donation is $10 per person and covers a raffle and an all-you-can-eat dinner including a salad bar and desserts. The raffle includes $50 gift cards for Wal-Mart and Target, and two certificates worth $50 each for nine holes for two players at Streamwood Oaks Golf Club. Winners need not be present. Wayne Countryside Garden Club: Wayne Countryside Garden Club presents "Garden Walk 2009" from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 27. Crystal Lake Toastmasters Club: The club is participating in Crystal Lake's Fourth of July Parade on Sunday, July 5. The parade starts at 1 p.m. at the Crystal Lake city hall. The theme of their float is "speaking," with the float patterned after a typical club meeting. Club members will ride the float and walk the parade route. The Crystal Lake Toastmasters Club meets from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. the first, third, and fifth Saturdays of the month at the Crystal Lake Amcore Bank on Route 14. Fox Valley Woodworkers Club: On Tuesday, July 7, Fox Valley Woodworkers Club will welcome Bill Gullberg, the Chairwright of the Windsor Academy of chairmaking, as the guest speaker. The club will meet from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church, 8 S. Lincoln Ave. in Batavia. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The club has been known as a gathering place for woodworking enthusiasts of all ages and levels of experience since 1984. Elgin VFW Post 1307: The Elgin Watch City Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1307 is sponsoring a Motorcycle and Vehicle Poker Run Rally on Sunday, July 12 to support the U.S. military troops serving our country in Operation Enduring Freedom. The run will begin and end at the VFW Post at 1601 Weld Road in Elgin, stopping at many area American Legions and VFW's along the way. Registration starts at 9 a.m. A pancake/sausage or egg burrito breakfast will be offered at a minimum cost to participants. The first vehicle will leaving the VFW at 11:30 a.m. Registration is $15 per person and all proceeds will go to provide needed personal supplies for the troops serving in the Middle East and for mailing of the packages. This is a great chance to have a lot of fun and help the men and women who are preserving our freedom under harsh conditions. Call (847) 888-9809 to register or for information.
Sunburst Corvette Club of Crystal Lake: The club will host its annual Corvette Car Show on Saturday, Aug. 29 at Reichert Chevrolet, 5220 Northwest Hwy. in Crystal Lake. The car show is the Corvette Club's primary fundraiser for the year. Proceeds are donated to local charities. This event is an opportunity to view some of the finest Corvettes in the Midwest.
The event will include three competitions for best car. Two are National Council Corvette Clubs Inc. contours events which will be judged by trained contours judges and participants will vie for NCCC points. There also will be a People's Choice Award. All spectators and participants are encouraged to vote for their favorite in each class for this event. Registration is encouraged. Same day registration and technical inspection will be from 8:30 to 10 a.m. There will be a driver's meeting for all competitors at 10:15 a.m. The judging for the first contours will begin at 10:30 a.m. Judging for the second contours event will begin following a break after the first event. Event registration is open to all Corvette owners. The registration fee is $12 per event before Aug. 1 or $15 per event after the deadline. Registration will be accepted on the day of the show as well. Spectators are welcome at no charge. Refreshments and food will be available. There will be silent auctions, raffles and door prizes for spectators and competitors. GM XM Radio will provide music for the event. The Sunburst Corvette Club is in its 32nd year. It has more than 120 members and uses funds it raises to support local charities such as The Salvation Army, Heart of a Marine Foundation and Toys for Tots. Its membership participates in a variety of events including racing competitions, leisurely drive-outs, cross country treks, and car shows. For information, visit www.sunburstcorvetteclub.com.
LITH Rotary: The Lake in the Hills Rotary Club meets every Wednesday from noon until 1 p.m. at the Colonial Cafe, 2555 W. Bunker Hill Drive in Algonquin. The club is currently accepting new members.
