Naperville teen faces felony charges for damaging mailboxes

A former Neuqua Valley High School football standout remained in custody Thursday in Will County jail, charged with two felonies and 21 misdemeanors stemming from a Wednesday incident in which authorities say he damaged 22 mailboxes and tussled with Naperville police.

Bond still had not been set for Britt Andros, 19, of Naperville, who police say appeared to be intoxicated when he destroyed or removed Ashbury neighborhood mailboxes ranging in value from $30 to $350. Total damage was estimated at more than $3,000.

Cmdr. Dave Hoffman said several witnesses called 911 around 4 a.m. Wednesday after seeing Andros, of 4440 Esquire Circle, damaging a mailbox near Orwell Road and Faulkner Drive.

Hoffman said witnesses reported seeing Andros running through the backyards of some of the houses where the damage occurred. Police found him hiding in bushes near one of the victims' homes.

After a brief foot chase, officers wrestled with Andros and used a Taser to stop him from fighting.

Hoffman said 22 mailboxes were found "overturned, destroyed, pulled out and thrown in the street" on the 3700 block of Faulkner Drive, the 1400 block of Grommon Road, the 3700 block of Mandeville Lane and the 1400 block of Orwell Road.

Andros did not provide police with a motive.

"As you can imagine, he was not terribly cooperative with officers, and he was intoxicated," Hoffman said.

Andros is charged with two felony charges of aggravated battery to a police officer and criminal damage to property for the $350 mailbox, as well as 21 misdemeanor counts of criminal damage to property, Hoffman said.

He also is charged with illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor and with being an intoxicated subject in a roadway, both misdemeanors.
