La Fox Civic Association: The La Fox Civic Association will sponsor the LaFox Community Days of Yard and Antique Sales from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6, in the Potter Building in the historic district on LaFox Road. Signs will direct the public to the locations. Visit LaFox area homes and the place for estates, Key Estates Sales and Twin Pines Estates Sales for some great deals. Elburn Lions Club: The Elburn Lions Club will host its 10th anniversary Motorcycle Ride, on Sunday, June 7. The 80-mile "open road" ride through scenic country roads will begin and finish at Elburn Lions Park, 500 S. Fillmore St, Elburn. Registration begins at 9 a.m. at Elburn Lions Park. Vendors, food and beverage will be available throughout the day. Upon returning to the 25-acre Lions Park, all will be entertained by the popular musical group, 61 Beale Street. This "Party in the Park" will last until 4 p.m. Additional events will include a 50/50 raffle, a Poker Walk in the Park and an Ironhorse Rodeo. All motorcyclists are welcome and encouraged to attend. This is a charity event hosted by all volunteers to benefit the following charities: Leader Dog (www.leaderdog.org); Camp Lions (www.lionsofillinoisfoundation.org/services/camplions/camplions.htm); Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of Illinois (www.jdrfillinois.org/); and Christmas Gifts for Needy Kids- purchasing of Christmas gifts for local DCFS youths. Sierra Club: Marko Spiegel will give a presentation on techniques of construction and remodeling of buildings to achieve maximum energy efficiency at reasonable cost. Sponsored by the Valley of the Fox Sierra Club, the talk will be given at 7 p.m. Monday, June 8 at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave. There is no admission charge. Spiegel is an engineer and entrepreneur born and educated in Germany. His lifelong passion for building along with a desire to conserve and innovate in construction led him to launch Conservation Technology International 2005.
Conservation Technology International - CTI services improves the energy efficiency of buildings by providing auditing and consulting services to business and homes. CTI promotes the One-Watt-House engineering process achieving higher comfort while reducing energy demand by up to 80 percent. There are two complete One-Watt-Houses in Illinois and one near completion in Indiana. None of them requires a furnace for heat. One-Watt-Houses are inspired by German Passivhauses and adjusted for local conditions. They can be heated with about one watt per square foot on the coldest day of the year and eliminate the need for traditional heating systems.

Batavia Women in Business: Chris Beebe of the Visionary Agency will present "Branding and Differentiation on a Budget" to Batavia Women in Business on Tuesday, June 9. Fox Valley Bicycle and Ski Club: The club will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 10 in the community room at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave. Join longtime club member Ed Foster and other Club/Route 66 riders as they share discussion and photos of one of the club's most successful bike tours of 2008, the Route 66 Bike Tour. Batavia American Legion: The Batavia American Legion Post 504 meets at 7 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the Batavia Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1197 Canteen, 645 S. River St., Batavia. The Batavia American Legion Post 504 announces its 2009 Stanley Johnson scholarship to Staci M. Clabough of Batavia. The scholarship is given annually in the memory of Stanley Johnson who was a charter member of Batavia Post 504 and the finance officer for 53 years. She plans to attend Grand Valley State University.
The American Legion Post 504 has elected its new officers for the years 2009-2010. The new officers will be inducted June 16. The new officers are: Robert Zeman, Commander; John Nuckles Jr., Senior Vice Commander; Dale Richard, Vice Commander; Irene Gaffney, Adjuntant; Brian Peters Sr., Finance Officer and Service Officer; Barton Lautz, Chaplain; Major Thomas, Sargeant-At-Arms; and Don Nallenweg, Public Affairs Officer.
Batavia VFW: Batavia Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1197 will host a Father's Day Car Show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 21 at the post home, 645 S. River St., Batavia. Admission is free for spectators, though donations are welcome.
Registration for the car show will be from 9 a.m. to noon. Cost for registration is $20. Pre-1983 American made vehicles only. There will be 101 trophies awarded at 3 p.m.
There will be a 50-50 raffle. Lunch will be served from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Beverages will be available. Proceeds to benefit Batavia VFW Post 1197 associated charities and their programs.
On Friday, June 19, enjoy the "Surf and Turf" from 5 to 8 p.m. It includes potato, salad, roll with butter, dessert and coffee. Cost is $14 per person. For details, call (630) 879-9630.
Campton Hills Rotary Club: A group of residents are forming a Campton Hills Rotary Club. They meet to discuss the creation of this organization at noon every Tuesday at Old Towne Pub, 40W290 LaFox Road in Campton Hills. Rotary is an international organization of business and professional persons united to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and peace in the world. Batavia Mothers' Club Foundation: The Batavia Mothers' Club Foundation has named Shauna Huck its new president. At a ceremony in May, the new officers were installed: Jen Meiring, president-elect; Katherine Murphy, past president; Tammi Groesbeck, treasurer; Dawn Scheck, secretary; Margie Goliak, ways and means; Michelle Brandseth, philanthropic; and Beth Feller, communications. Huck will oversee all aspects of the 501(c) 3 organization, which raises money and hosts community events to improve the lives of children and families in the Fox Valley area.
"We are looking forward to another successful year of fundraising," says Huck. "In this time of greater need, we hope to be of help to organizations that support area women, children and families."
The club also announces its 2009-10 general meetings will be held at 7 p.m. the first Wednesday of each month at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave. Membership is comprised of local moms interested in supporting the community through philanthropic endeavors. The Batavia Mothers' Club Foundation is a nonprofit organization, founded in 1934, dedicated to improving the quality of life for children in the Fox Valley area. Each year, the club donates over $25,000 to local charities, including the Batavia Clothes Closet and the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry, whose activities support this mission. Sugar Grove Corn Boil Committee: The 2009 Sugar Grove Corn Boil hometown celebration is off to a good start with new bands and a new carnival, as well as free activities for kids and adults, and the fireworks display in the area, thanks to the Sugar Grove Lions Club. The Corn Boil Committee is working hard to keep the tradition of family fun and entertainment at family affordable prices. The festival will be July 24-26.
They need volunteers every year and this year is no exception. To volunteer in whatever way you can in this hometown event, call the Corn Boil hotline at (630) 466-5166 and leave your name and number and a volunteer will call you back. Local business people have been extremely generous to the Sugar Grove Corn Boil but even they have limits. So if you can't volunteer to work for a few hours, maybe you would like to make a contribution to the fireworks. Local businesspeople and residents who have enjoyed past firework displays or who plan to come this year are invited to make any size donation they can afford. Donations can be sent to: The Sugar Grove Corn Boil, P.O. Box 225, Sugar Grove, IL 60554 and the checks should be made out to: The Sugar Grove Lions Club. The nonprofit Corn Boil Committee donates everything, except seed money for the next year's event, back to local groups and organizations right here in Sugar Grove. Pottawatomie Garden Club: The Pottawatomie Garden Club has changed its annual tree and shrub sale at Wasco Nursery from April to September. Trees and shrubs planted in the fall do best in Zone 5 climate.
