Barrington's attack ends overmatched Huntley's run

Attack, Attack, Attack.

Barrington certainly adhered to that philosophy in cruising past overmatched Huntley 3-0 in the championship game of the Class 3A Jacobs girls soccer sectional Friday in Algonquin.

The Fillies (20-3-3) advance to the Barrington supersectional to play Conant, a 1-0 winner over Geneva Friday, on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Huntley ends the season at 24-2-1, falling in the sectional for the second straight year.

"Our best offense is to attack and pressure our opponents," said Barrington coach Ryan Stengren. "Our game plan was to come out aggressive but controlled and we did. We jumped on them right away. I have seen Huntley twice and they are a very dangerous team. We did a good job defensively on them."

The Fillies' defense concentrated on stopping Huntley sophomore standout Aimee Wronski. Wronski was unable to even get a shot on goal.

"Number 18 (Wronski) is an excellent player and we didn't want her to have any opportunities to get a shot," said Stengren. "She is a very dangerous player in open space and we did a great job on her."

The Fillies scored the only goal they needed as Mary Kubiuk beat Huntley goalie Sarah Hoffman with 22:39 left in the first half. Amy Johnson, who assisted on all 3 goals, sent a sold cross to Kubiuk, who gave Barrington a 1-0 lead.

"We really worked hard at the beginning of the game and put a lot of pressure on them," said Kubiuk. "It was important to score that first goal."

Lauren DeCraene's goal gave the Fillies a 2-0 lead with 7:34 left in the half.

Huntley's Emily Konior had a golden chance to score on a direct kick with 1:35 before intermission but Barrington goalkeeper Kelly Pedersen made the save.

Emmelie Hirdes scored an insurance goal for the Fillies with 25:05 left in the game.

"We didn't execute the game plan," said Huntley coach Kris Grabner. "All three of their goals came on mistakes by us. We didn't mark their scorers and anybody can score when you are not marked. They took it to us and they had more desire to get to the ball then we did. They showed up and we didn't."

Barrington had 11 shots on goal compared to 4 for Huntley. Hoffman had 6 saves for the Red Raiders while Pedersen stopped 2 shots for the Fillies.
