Rolling Meadows apartment fire still mystery:
Authorities still don't know what caused the May 7 fire that consumed a three-story apartment building in Rolling Meadows, though they do not suspect arson, a Rolling Meadows Fire official said Tuesday. The fire is believed to have started accidentally in the kitchen area of a second-floor apartment, Unit 208, in the 4708 building of the 12 Oaks complex. One person, identified only as a worker, suffered some burns in that apartment and was transported to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, Rolling Meadows Fire Deputy Chief Brian Dempsey said. Dempsey could not verify several eyewitness accounts of a man who appeared to be a worker jumping out of the patio door of that second-floor apartment with one arm on fire and later taking off in a car. No firefighters were injured. The fire displaced more than 60 people, including 27 families living in roughly 30 units in the gutted building, one of 19 west of Route 53 and south of Algonquin Road. The fire blazed through the second floor and up on the third floor and then into the attic, where the wooden trusses caught fire quickly destroying 80 percent of the building's roof.
