Mid-America paddlers to choose race routes
The Mid-American Canoe and Kayak Race returns to its traditional date - the first Sunday in June - with a new twist.
For the first time in its history, the 48th running on June 7 will feature two different race lengths on the Fox River - a 10-mile run starting in St. Charles and a 6-mile paddle from Batavia - with both races finishing at McCullough Park in Aurora.
"We're excited to offer an alternative for paddlers," said race co-director Matt Saviello. "This will open the door for a wider range of paddlers, from competitive racers to first-time families. Having paddlers of all abilities participate is what makes this such a festive event."
The 10-mile race will begin at Mount St. Mary Park in downtown St. Charles, with the 6-mile course starting at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Overseas Post 1197 in Batavia, just south of downtown.
A tailgate-style party for all paddlers, friends and families will take place around the finish area at McCullough Park and feature food, music, beer tent, games, prize drawings, vendors and entertainment. An awards ceremony and trophy presentations will cap the event.
All registered racers will receive a commemorative T-shirt, goody bag and Jimmy John's sub sandwich lunch with a side and soft drink.
