Leifel's hit gives Dundee-Crown win over Jacobs

Chris Leifel needed to redeem himself.

The Dundee-Crown left fielder made a costly error in the top of the seventh, which led to Jacobs taking a 7-4 lead.

Leifel more than made up for himself as he jacked a walk off RBI single to score Kyle Ryan, who was running for Kirk Hanselmann. Leifel's two-out hit capped a 4-run comeback that gave the Chargers an 8-7 victory in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division baseball action Wednesday in Carpentersville.

"I'm just glad I made up for that error in the field," said Leifel, who went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. "I was looking for any kind of contact. I went to the opposite field. I was glad I was able to pick t he team up at the end."

Leifel connected off Josh Kranz, who came on in relief for Greg Leasure (0-1). The Chargers (5-18, 2-7) scored all 4 runs from batters who reached base while Leasure was on the mound. He allowed just 1 hit, but combined with walking Brendon Schumacher and hitting Hanselmann with a pitch, D-C had plenty of baserunners.

"I'm glad for Chris," Chargers' coach Jon Sawyer said. "He's done a lot of really good things for us this season. He's done a nice job of making adjustments and he made 1 at the end of the game."

After trailing 4-3 going into the final inning, Jacobs (11-19, 3-7) was able to score 4 runs despite not recording a hit. The Chargers had a pair of errors and starting pitcher Zach Vodicka walked 4 batters to allow the Golden Eagles to take a 7-4 lead.

Third baseman Chris Sailor (3-for-4) picked up his second win of the season, taking over with one out in the seventh. Vodicka went 6 1/3 innings allowing 3 earned runs off 8 hits while striking out six.

The Golden Eagles switched catcher John Amann from the No. 3 spot in the batting order to leadoff and were immediately rewarded. Amann opened the game up with a home run, giving Jacobs the early 1-0 edge.

Amann, who went 3-for-3 with 4 runs scored, extended the Golden Eagles' lead to 3-2 when he hit his ninth homer of the season in the top of the fifth. Amann also scored in the seventh after walking to get on base.

"Teams were pitching around him," Jacobs' coach Eric Sanders said. "Johnny is a consummate team player."

Golden Eagles' freshman Henry Gigeous got his first varsity start, going 52/3 innings allowing 4 runs off 9 hits with 6 strikeouts.
