Moore leaves township on own terms

Even the last meeting as Libertyville Township Supervisor includes some significant business for Betty-Ann Moore.

An agreement to restore a township parcel on Atkinson Road continues a practice of land management that has become a hallmark of Moore's six-year tenure in the top spot. Once restored, the township can sell wetland credits for revenue to help maintain its 1,500 acres of open space.

Moore turns over the reins Thursday night to Kathleen O'Connor, a township trustee, who ran unopposed for the four-year supervisor post and was elected April 7. Moore technically remains in office until Monday, May 18.

"That's it. It's not going to be easy. This has been fabulous but I think the time is right," said Moore, who announced last fall she would not be running for re-election.

Aside from the meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, a retirement recognition will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Friday at the township office, 359 Merrill Court, Libertyville. The public is welcome.

The former Lake County Democratic chairwoman had served four years as a township trustee before taking over in January 2003 for the late F.T. "Mike" Graham, who had resigned for health reasons. Moore overcame a tough challenge and was elected in 2005. Also that year, she was appointed to the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority's board of directors, on which she will still serve.

While the township was noted for its quest to acquire open space during Graham's tenure, Moore faced a less-than-textbook management system when she took over. She has focused on revising practices and procedures and providing a clear direction.

"I have worked very hard but it has been a joy," she said Wednesday. "You don't often get a chance in life to grab a hold of something and set things right."

Moore also noted the township's continued work in operating a food pantry and providing general assistance and credited a hardworking staff for the township's success.

"Whatever frame of mind I'm in (at the party Friday), I'm sure I'll have a box of Kleenex handy," she added.
