Steininger leads Vernon Hills past Highland Park

Vernon Hills' girls water polo team put together a strong effort in its own pool to win its opening game in the state tournament Wednesday.

The Cougars defeated Highland Park 9-5, as Kelly Steininger led the way.

The senior had 5 goals and 4 assists in the fifth-seeded Cougars' sectional quarterfinal win over the fourth-seeded Giants.

Freshman Dana Andrea tallied 3 goals for Vernon Hills, and Ellie Silver also scored. Sophomore Gena Lopez made 16 saves in goal.

Vernon Hills next plays Stevenson at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Mundelein 9, Buffalo Grove 0: At Vernon Hills, the Mustangs posted their second shutout of the season, receiving 2 goals apiece from Alice Denny, Yesenia Rossi, Dani Caldwell and Alexis Jones in the sectional quarterfinal.

Mundelein goalie Emily Tylka made 14 saves. Evelyn Kurzac also scored for the second-seeded Mustangs, who play No. 3 Wheeling at 5:45 p.m. Friday.

Stevenson 13, Libertyville 6: At Vernon Hills, the top-seeded Patriots advanced to Friday's 4:30 p.m. sectional semifinal against Vernon Hills.
