Roller's PK goal all Jacobs needs to down D-C

One handball call made the difference for Jacobs.

KC Roller converted a penalty kick after Dundee-Crown was called for a handball in the box, and that was all the scoring as the Golden Eagles downed their rivals, 1-0, in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division girls soccer action in Carpentersville Tuesday.

Neither team generated much offense in the final regular-season game for both teams.

"It was boring," said Jacobs coach Jim Dzialo. "We didn't create many opportunities. We had a post in the first 5 minutes. We made a great play and had a post on the second play.

"That was probably the best soccer we played, when we knocked it around and got service on that post. But other than that, there were not a lot of opportunities. Both teams played it pretty tight."

Neither goalkeeper, Jacobs' Alyssa Barnard or D-C's Deanna Libricz, was tested that often.

It looked like the game would go into overtime scoreless until Roller's kick with just over 17 minutes left.

"I thought it was a really even matchup," said Chargers' coach Sebastian Falinski. "I was really disappointed to see a game end on a penalty shot. It's just disappointing to see the girls work so hard and then a call like that takes the wind out of you."

The Chargers (4-14, 2-8) had some chances in the second half, including 2 breakaways by Licia Keyes. Barnard's diving save deflected the first shot away, and sweeper Jackie Rosato broke up the second.

Jacobs (9-11-2) then pushed the ball up and the push culminated in the penalty kick. After Libricz deflected a shot, a Charger defender knocked it down with both hands, bringing a whistle.
