Poehlmann, Anderson star for Schaumburg
Schaumburg catcher Aly Poehlmann felt bad for her pitcher Missy Anderson when the crafty right-hander lost her perfect game with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning at Hersey on Tuesday.
So what did the talented junior receiver do?
Poehlmann made sure Anderson wouldn't have to retire another batter that inning.
Poehlmann threw the baserunner out trying to steal second as shortstop Nicole Chase made the tag.
In addition, the hot-hitting Poehlmann went 3-for-4 at the plate to help Schaumburg Saxons blank the Huskies 6-0 in Arlington Heights.
Coach Erin Malinowski's Saxons are now 12-8, 6-4 in the Mid-Suburban West.
Anderson (10-5) entered the game with a 1.09 ERA and lowered that figure even more as she struck out seven (118 for the season) and gave up just 1 hit in 5 innings.
Jessica Cook threw the final 2 innings for Schaumburg. The sophomore retired six of the last seven batters she faced, with Caralyn Trom getting a leadoff single to right to start the seventh.
"Jessica did fantastic," Malinowski said. "It was her first outing in a conference game and she did great."
Kari Tunney's single to left center broke up Anderson's perfect game bid in the fifth.
"Even though it was disappointing that Missy couldn't get the perfect game, you still have to stay aggressive," Poehlmann said. "You've always got to be ready for runners to be stealing on you.
"Missy pitched great and Jessica (Cook) really proved herself, too. Nicole (Chase) made a great play on that tag (to get the runner trying to steal)."
Alexis Carravetta reached on an error as the first batter in the game.
Alyssa Lancaster sacrificed her to second, and Poehlmann followed with a single to shallow left. Carravetta came home when Chase reached on a 4-6 fielder's choice.
Carravetta's RBI single in the second brought home Theresa McGreevy for a 2-0 lead.
The Saxons wrapped up the scoring with a 4-run fourth, including a 2-run triple to right center by Lancaster and an RBI single by Poehlmann.
"It was a great team effort," Poehlmann added "It was great that we string some of this together."
Shannon Giovannone also reached base three times for the winners while Brianne Lingl and Caitlin Becker each scored a run.
"We haven't played that great in our last few games," said Huskies coach Molly Freeman, whose team is 5-14 and 4-6. "One or two games can get you down. But this team has a lot of pride in itself. These girls are not going to roll over and die. It's just a matter of getting better every game."
Hoffman Estates 5, Palatine 1: Senior Kaitlin Walsh (6-8) struck out 11 and threw a 3-hitter for the visiting Hawks (8-13, 3-6), who scored twice in the second and once in the fourth.
Alex Wulbecker and Kelsey Pellus scored from second and third base in the second inning after Wulbecker got caught in a rundown between third and home.
In the fourth, Colleen Roberts led off with a double, went to third on Wulbecker's single and scored on Kaitlyn Kliver's grounder to first base.
Junior Chrissy Roto (6-8) struck out seven for the Pirates (10-11, 4-6), who scored in the bottom of the seventh when Michelle Dellamaria led off with single and scored.
Joanne Jablonski (1-for-2, 2 walks) and catcher Alyx Ballenger (picked off one runner) had the other hits for the Pirates.
Fremd 3, Carmel 0: Senior Casey Latal (5-0) earned a nonconference win by tossing a 2-hitter with 5 strikeouts. Ali Gaeding went 2-for-3 and scored a run for the host Vikings (19-1), while Lauren Zaworski doubled.
Maine West 6, Glenbrook North 5: For the second time in as many CSL North games, the Warriors (13-9, 5-0) rallied from a big deficit to win.
Eight days after coming back from a 7-1 deficit against Deerfield, the Warriors climbed back against host Glenbrook North after trailing 5-1 after four innings.
West scored 3 times in the fifth, cutting the deficit to 5-4 on a 2-run single by Alli Ellwood (3-for-4, 2 RBI).
The Warriors scored the tying and go-ahead runs in the sixth when an error on Margo Ehorn's infield grounder allowed Alyssa Bojarski and Kim Morales to score with two outs.
Warriors senior hurler Emily Ott (10-3) struck out 10 and walked four in a complete-game effort. She also kept her remarkable streak offensive streak alive. The leadoff batter has reached base safely 20 straight times. During the streak she is 11-for-12 with 8 walks. She has not been retired since the eighth inning of a 12-inning game against Lane Tech on April 17.
Leyden 16, Proviso East 0 (5): Junior Dana Thomas (4-4) threw a 1-hitter with 7 strikeouts for Leyden.
