Montini takes Driscoll deep

On the fourth pitch of the game, Montini showed exactly where Tuesday's baseball game was headed.

From the moment Kevin Hankins led off the top of the first inning with a home run, the Broncos piled on the offense in a 15-4 Suburban Catholic Conference victory over Driscoll in Addison.

Montini (12-6, 6-4) batted around three times, starting with a 5-run first inning and a 4-run second that quickly put the margin at 9-0.

"It was a great day for our offense," said Montini outfielder Frank Montalto, who had 3 hits and 4 RBI. "It just shows how much we've improved throughout the year and how well we can do with the bats."

Tuesday proved to a be a speedbump for Driscoll, which is looking for a strong conclusion to its final baseball season. Last week it was announced the 43-year-old school will be closing in June.

Driscoll (13-10, 5-5) suffered through numerous frustrations on Tuesday as the Highlanders stranded the bases loaded with no runs scored in two of the first three innings. Rick Divito's fourth-inning RBI single and an error put 2 runs on the board, but by then Driscoll trailed 10-2.

Among the 333 pitches thrown by both sides, 15 walks were issued.

"We just got outplayed," said Driscoll coach Sean Bieterman. "It's tough because this is a personal rivalry, but we also need to keep the big picture in mind. We need to be playing better."

Hankins, Kevin Glennon and Jeff Spokas had 2 hits apiece for Montini, which added 3 runs in the sixth inning and 2 runs in the seventh. Spokas had 3 RBI while Kevin Huber drove in 2 runs.

Pierre Washington-Steel, who went 3-for-5 for Driscoll, singled home a run in the fifth inning. Divito also had 3 hits.

"We've been hitting the ball well," said Broncos coach Bill Leeberg. "Overall I'm pleased. Hopefully we can get something going now."
