Inverness receives first call:
After a quiet first day, the Invernesss Police Department's inaugural call turned out to be a false alarm. A resident accidentally set off the alarm around 7:30 a.m. Friday, which led the alarm company to call 911. Chief Bob Haas said there have been a couple minor calls since then requiring the fire department, in addition to traffic stops.
Foreclosure seminar:
State Rep. Mark Walker of Arlington Heights will host a foreclosure seminar with the Illinois attorney general's office, Bank of America and Chase Bank from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 2, at Frontier Park, 1933 N. Kennicott Drive in Arlington Heights. The seminar is geared toward people in pre-foreclosure or threatened with foreclosure, and will provide an overview of the process: what to expect, who to contact and scams to avoid. River high, but not a threat:
The Des Plaines River was more than a foot over the 5-foot flood level Friday in Des Plaines after heavy rains in the Chicago area and was expected to crest today at 6.4 feet, the National Weather Service reported. But flooding doesn't become a significant threat until water rises above 8 feet, and no major precautions were underway.
Harper elects new officers:
The Harper College board of trustees elected new officers at their meeting Thursday. Laurie Stone was re-elected chair, while Richard Hoffman moved from secretary to vice chair, a post previously held by William Kelly. Diane Hill, appointed to the board last August after husband David Hill passed away, was elected secretary. All three votes were unanimous.
Kids' art show opens Sunday:
More than four dozen works of art created by children as young as 4 years old will be on display beginning Sunday, May 3, at Prairie Center for the Arts, 201 Schaumburg Court, Schaumburg. The art was created by students at Arlington Heights' Monart Drawing Studio and instructor Ellen Sharpe, who's the only licensed Monart instructor in Illinois. The public is invited to a gala opening reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, and the work will be on display at the performing arts center through the month of May. Chorus performs at church:
The Spirit of Life Chorus will present a free concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 3, at Faith Lutheran Church, 431 S. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights. The ecumenical Christian concert chorus, which has more than 100 members, was formed in 1990 and has performed in church sanctuaries and auditoriums throughout northern Illinois.
