Bartlett 2nd, BC 3rd at Crystal Lake Central

Sure, Bartlett would have liked to have won Friday's 36th Annual Crystal Lake Central Boys Track and Field Meet held at Metcalf Field.

But the Hawks just didn't have the talent to match Belvidere North, which won the meet with 121 points.

Bartlett, led by a pair of first-place finishes from Dan Karys, placed second with a score of 73. Karys won the long jump (22 feet, 2 inches) and the triple jump (45-2). Unfortunately, the talented senior tweaked his ankle during the jumps and was unable to compete in the 400-meter dash, where he was the top seed. He was also on the 800 relay which was ranked third.

"It wasn't worth the risk to let Dan run in the 400 and 800 relay," said Bartlett coach Jeff Bral. 'If this was a sectional or state meet he would have gone but not tonight. We have too many important meets left this season."

Burlington Central placed a solid third with a score of 67. The Rockets got first-place efforts from Mitch Plum (400, 52.28), Nick Smith (200, 23.04) and Paco Wleklinski (pole vault, 14-3).

Plum, who stumbled early in the race, nipped Crystal Lake Central's Jackson Francis (52.45) at the finish line.

"With the bad start, I had a lot of ground to make up," said Plum. "I knew I had to really kick hard at the end and had just enough left."

Huntley, which had 5 first-place efforts, was fifth with 61 points.

Marcus Popenfoose led the Red Raiders with championships in the discus (167-3) and shot put (57-2 1/2).

"I was really flat tonight," said Popenfoose. "I didn't throw the shot or discus well tonight. It was a poor effort. I was not mentally into it. I took a leap back tonight. I have to get back to practice and work on my technique."

Huntley also got a first place finish from Alex Beruscha in the 1,600 (4:25.10).

The Red Raiders won the 2 of the 4 relays. Huntley claimed the 400 relay (43.93, Josh Sivila, Brock Larkin, Jeremy Hansen, Matt Hammer) and the 800 relay (1:31.64, Hansen, Hammer, Tor Larkin, Brandon Luczak).

Antioch placed seventh in the 10-team meet with a score of 46.

Cameron White led the Sequoits with a first place finish in the 100 (11.46). White was also second in the 200. He was pleased with his effort in the 100.

"I got off to a good start and got a nice lead," said White. "I got a leg cramp at the end but had enough to win."

Round Lake, which got a first place finish from Jim Pisarski (high jump, 6-4), was ninth with 18 points.
