Supporters making last-ditch effort to save Driscoll

Supporters are making a last-ditch effort today to prevent Driscoll Catholic High School from closing in June.

They are meeting at 11:30 a.m. with Joliet Diocese Bishop J. Peter Sartain to pitch an idea to keep the 43-year-old Addison high school open as an independent Catholic school. The meeting is expected to last several hours.

Today's meeting was scheduled after Christian Brothers of the Midwest, which operates Driscoll within the Diocese of Joliet, announced it is pulling its sponsorship due to declining enrollment and dwindling finances.

The independent religious order made its decision after rejecting an alternate five-year operating plan proposed by a committee representing students, parents, administrators, alumni and the public. The group raised $930,000 in three weeks to keep the school afloat.
