Jacobs kicks things up a notch in 2nd half
After a "boring" first half, it didn't take long for the Jacobs girls soccer team to get excited in the second half.
Emily Preis scored less than 8 minutes into the second 40 minutes to help the Golden Eagles to a 2-0 victory over rival Dundee-Crown in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division game in Algonquin Monday night.
"Terribly boring first half, no possession," Jacobs coach Jim Dzialo said. "There was a lot of kick ball."
Neither team created good scoring chances, or even pretty good scoring chances, in the first half.
Jacobs (6-7-2, 2-2) took advantage of its fourth corner kick of the game early in the second half. KC Roller found Preis without a defender around her and Preis headed home the cross with 32:08 remaining to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.
"A dead ball situation came and opened the game up," Dzialo said. "Preis did a nice job with a strong finish."
Another corner led to Jacbos' second goal as well. After Roller's corner, the ball bounced around the Chargers' penalty area and came across the goal mouth, where Jackie Rosato was standing and scored with 20:57 left.
The best scoring chance for D-C (2-11, 0-3) came with 6 minutes remaining in the game. Licia Keyes found some room on the left side. Her shot from a tough angle got past Jacobs goalkeeper Alyssa Barnard, but went just wide right.
"I thought it was an even match," Chargers coach Sebastian Falinski said. "It was the little things that have hurt us all year long."
Barnard had to make only one save for the shutout. D-C goalkeeper Deanna Libricz made 5 saves.
