LivingWell program to explore cancer, genetics tie

LivingWell Cancer Resource Center, a provider of nonmedical support at no cost for people living with cancer, will host a special evening to explore the link between cancer and genetics.

The evening will begin with a showing of the documentary film, "In the Family", which focuses on filmmaker Joanna Rudnick's experience with hereditary cancer. This film will be followed by an expert panel discussion with oncologist Dr. Robert Bayer of LaGrange Oncology; and genetic counselors, Bhuma Krishnamachari of Edward Hospital and Scott Michalski of Delnor Hospital. The film and panel discussion will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, at LivingWell, 1803 W. State St. in Geneva. Refreshments and light hors d'oeuvres will be served.

"The film and the panel discussion will focus on what our genes really tell us about our cancer risk, how treatment decisions are altered after genetic testing, and what we should be aware of for our future generations if we are diagnosed with cancer or get a positive genetic test result," said Jill Smallwood, LivingWell Cancer Resource Center program coordinator. "These experts will explain the facts and then be available for questions and answers from the attendees."

The Genetics Panel presentation is part of a Six Weeks of Wellness program focusing on "Optimizing Health for Cancer Survivors." Upcoming presentations include: "The Psychological Impact of Cancer;" "Can Alternative & Complementary Therapies Help?" and "Optimizing Bone Health." Attendees are welcome to attend any number of the presentations and are not obligated to be present for the entire series.
