From the armed services
• Master Sgt. Matthew R. Becker was selected for promotion to the rank of senior master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. Becker is an aircraft production supervisor for the 100th Maintenance Squadron at RAF Mildenhall, England. The senior master sergeant has served in the military for 19 years. He is the son of Robert R. Becker of Mount Prospect. The sergeant is a graduate of Maine West High School, Des Plaines, and received an associate in applied science degree in 2007, from the Community College of the Air Force, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala.
• Air Force Airman Armando I. Servellon graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, core values and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches; and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate in applied science degree relating through the Community College of the Air Force. He is the son of Aracely Servellon of Des Plaines, and a 2005 graduate of Maine East High School, Park Ridge.
• Coast Guard Seaman Apprentice Victoria L. Stephens, daughter of Valentina A. Scheidemann of Lakeport, Calif., and Gary J. Stephens of Rosemont, recently graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, N. J. During the eight-week training program, Stephens completed a vigorous training curriculum consisting of academics and practical instruction on water safety and survival, military customs and courtesies, seamanship skills, first aid, fire fighting and marksmanship. A major emphasis is also placed on physical fitness, health and wellness Stephens and other recruits also received instruction on the Coast Guard's core values - honor, respect and devotion to duty - and how to apply them in their military performance and personal conduct.
