Air Force concert is free:

The U.S. Air Force Concert Band and Singing Sergeants will perform 7 p.m. Friday, April 17, at Forest View Educational Center, 2121 S. Goebbert Road, Arlington Heights. Co-sponsored by the Daily Herald and District 214 Community Education, the 52-member band will perform a variety of musical selections capped off with a tribute to the armed services. The Singing Sergeants is the internationally recognized, official 23-voice chorus of the U.S. Air Force. The concert is free, tickets are at the door.

Police seek armed robbery suspect:

A man brandishing a knife robbed the La Texoateca Grocery Store, 586 Potter Road, Des Plaines, Monday night, police said. The man entered the store at 9:05 p.m. and demanded cash from an employee who directed him to the cash register, police said. The suspect took an undetermined amount of money and fled on foot, police said. Police are looking for a man 5 feet 5 inches tall, 150 pounds last seen wearing blue jeans, a black hooded sweatshirt and a black jacket.

Maine Twp. senior expo:

Maine Township's third annual Senior Expo "Swing into Spring" will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, April 24, at the Golf Mill Shopping Center in Niles. Nearly 60 exhibitors will have displays on senior housing, health, financial and other products and services benefiting senior citizens. There will also be tap dancing, a yoga demonstration and "Sitting Rockette" performances. House walk coming:

Tickets are going on sale Friday, April 17, for the Arlington Heights Historical Society's 16th Annual House Walk and Tea. The event from 12-5 p.m. Sunday, June 14, features six diverse homes. Complimentary tea with a chocolate dipping station, sandwiches, and sweets is included with tickets purchased by June 10. Tickets may be purchased in person 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday at the Arlington Heights Historical Museum, 110 W. Fremont St.; 1:30-4:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday at the Heritage Gallery, 112 W. Fremont St.; at Vignettes, 15 E. Campbell St.; or by phone at (847) 255-1225. Online sales begin Thursday, May 7, at the Arlington Heights Park District Web site, ahpd.org. Homes on tour include the Nathaniel M. Banta House featured on the National Historic Register, a 1917 Arts & Crafts bungalow, a 1930s brown brick bungalow with Queen Anne appointments and a 1920s renovated bungalow.

Boating safety classes set:

U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 7-11 has set several two-day basic boating safety classes for the months ahead at Holy Ghost Church, 254 N. Wood Dale Road in Wood Dale. The four sessions will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on the following Saturdays: April 18 and 25; May 9 and 16; June 6 and 13; and July 18 and 25. The cost is $40 per person or $50 per family. To register, call Marlene at (630) 860-2975. There also will be free vessel safety checks at the same location from 10 a.m. to noon on April 25, May 16, June 13 and July 25.

Chamber scholarship open:

The Palatine Area Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for its 2009 scholarship. It will be awarded to students who have shown outstanding leadership qualities and excel in school involvement, work experience and community activities. Financial need and scholastic ability are not criteria. Applicants must live in Palatine Township and continue full-time at a postsecondary college or vocational school.
