Experienced candidates will do best in Diamond Lake Dist. 76

Last November, voters in Diamond Lake Elementary District 76 approved a referendum that allowed the district to keep summer school and other programs intact. Instead of having to deal with cuts, board members can concentrate on enhancing the experience for its students, which includes a large Hispanic population.

Four candidates are seeking three, 4-year seats on the board. Incumbents Valerie Walker, a social worker, and Keith Loeffler, a chief financial officer, are endorsed.

Both were involved in the board's accomplishments, which included a successful battle with the state allowing the district to continue its unique approach to bilingual learning. They want to continue the inroads that have been made in test scores, community recognition and other areas.

Newcomer Patricia Naegele, a part-time tax consultant, has actively volunteered in the district for 10 years. She is well-informed on the issues and has a strong desire to advance district goals. She also is endorsed.

Laura Vogt, a small-business owner, was appointed to the board last October. She had been involved in the referendum effort and various school activities. While committed to enriching the diverse atmosphere in Diamond Lake schools, we feel her vision for the district's future was well-intentioned but vague.
