Our choices for Hawthorn District 73
Hawthorn Elementary District 73 has done a good job managing enrollment growth over the years. The district is currently enjoying a fairly stable period. But school administrators and board members may be facing tougher times in the next four years. Cool heads and clear thinking must prevail.
Four candidates are vying for three 4-year terms. Two incumbents and two newcomers are looking to take on the job.
Incumbents Timothy Shanahan and Donna Gaidamak bring their experience to the table. As board president, Shanahan's leadership has set a high standard. Shanahan desires to make good decisions, keep a budget surplus and achieve the highest level of education for the money.
Gaidamak wants to continue the board's momentum that she helped put in motion. She is committed to maintaining the overall health of the district and has four years of proven experience. A strong communicator, Gaidamak's primary concern is providing a quality education for all students.
Shanahan and Gaidamak are endorsed.
Both Theresa Calabrese and Julie Weiler have a sincere desire to see the district succeed.
Calabrese will work to improve communication between board members, administration and parents. Her experience in corporate communications will serve her well. Her energy and enthusiasm are positive qualities.
Calabrese is endorsed.
Weiler's long personal history and connection to District 73 is noteworthy, but we felt she had vague ideas on how to improve education. Her willingness to learn and to listen were also commendable.
Candidate Anne Hoffman has dropped out of the race, but her name will still appear on the ballot.
