Future mat stars: The roster for the Illinois Top Dawgs wrestling team is nearly complete and includes some local products.

The all-star team represents the Illinois Elementary School Association.

Top Dawgs include Tyler Lindvall of Lake Zurich and J.J. Nawrot of Deerfield.

The team competes at the National Middle School Duals in Danville on March 28-29 and will face other all-star teams from Illinois, Texas, Oregon, Wyoming, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Nebraska. The Illinois Top Dawgs have competed in the Duals for eight years and took home a medal in 2008.

"This year, we have more state champs on the team than any year", said Phil Esposito, head coach at Eisenhower Junior High in Darien and volunteer coach for the Top Dawgs since 2004.

Lindvall, the current elementary school champion at 167 pounds, is only the second wrestler from Lake Zurich ever chosen to the team. The other is Lake Zurich High School senior John Brewer, who was a 185-pound champion. Brewer participated in 2004, when the team also medaled.

The Top Dawgs was organized as an Illinois not-for-profit corporation in 2007, giving middle school wrestlers a unique opportunity to improve their skills and broaden their awareness. The IESA state wrestling final, which was this year March 12-13 in DeKalb, is normally the qualifying tournament. The team is 100 percent funded by corporate or private donations.
