Contest deadline is Friday
Entries are due Friday, March 13, for the Multicultural Festival poster contest sponsored by the Addison Cultural Arts Development Commission and the Addison Center for the Arts. Students in grades six through eight may design a poster with the theme "Around the World in One Day." Posters must be black-and-white, drawn with marker - not pencil - so they may be reproduced. Winners receive a cash prize at the festival Saturday, April 4, and their designs will be used for festival posters and programs. Entries must be dropped off with the receptionist at Addison Village Hall, 1 Friendship Plaza, and labeled Attention: Annette Leiber. Info: (630) 543-4100, ext. 7416.
Student winners named
The West Chicago VFW Post 6791 and the Ladies Auxiliary awarded more than $5,500 in prize money to Community High School students who entered the annual Voice of Democracy Competition. Forty-two students from the West Chicago high school entered the contest, which is designed to foster patriotism and allow students to voice their opinion in a three- to five-minute recorded essay based on an annual theme. This year's theme was "Service and Sacrifice by America's Veterans Benefit Today's Youth by ..." The national contest is open to freshmen through seniors and is sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Ladies Auxiliary. Seniors Ryan Crawford of Winfield, Jozef Pavnica and Rachel Molinaro, both of Carol Stream, tied for first Place. All three advanced to the 19th District Competition where Pavnica placed eighth and Crawford placed fifth.
