Probation for forgery try

A Prospect Heights man was placed on 18 months probation Friday after pleading guilty to attempted forgery in Lake County Circuit Court. Alan Aylarov, 23, of the 800 block of Old Willow Road, admitted he stole two checks from an elderly Vernon Hills couple who employed him as a caretaker. Assistant State's Attorney James Newman said Aylarov made out the checks to himself and cashed them in July of last year. He was originally charged with forgery and aggravated identity theft, but Newman agreed to reduce the charges in exchange for the guilty plea. Associate Judge George Bridges also ordered Aylarov to pay a $500 fine, $1,915 in restitution and perform 100 hours of public service.

McHenry Sheriff names deputy jail chief

Patrick Firman, the former chief for the Lake County jail, was sworn in Friday as the new second-in-command and the McHenry County Adult Corrections Facility. In his new role, Firman will help oversee a facility that holds more than 550 inmates on an average day, including hundreds of foreign nationals detained by federal immigration authorities. He also will supervise a staff of 205 workers. Sheriff Keith Nygren said Firman was chosen after a nationwide because of his "stellar background" and experience at all levels of corrections work. Firman fills a post left vacant last year when former deputy chief Daniel Sedlock was promoted to chief.

New principal to be named

Libertyville High School's next principal could be named Monday night. Libertyville-Vernon Hills Area High School District 128 Superintendent Prentiss Lea is expected to recommend a candidate for the post at the school board's meeting, set to begin at 7 p.m. at Vernon Hills High, 145 N. Lakeview Parkway. The board could then vote on the nominee's contract. As of Friday, the search process had narrowed to three candidates, district officials said. Libertyville's last full-time principal, Brad Swanson, left for a job in a different district in 2008. Co-principals Jim Whittington and Michael Stevens have led the school since the fall.

District 103 honored

Lincolnshire-Prairie View School District 103 has received a 2009 Bright Red Apple Award for educational excellence from a group called SchoolSearch. District 103 is one of only 12 elementary school districts in Lake County to receive this prestigious award. The award is based on five factors: academic performance, the student-to-teacher ratio, expenditure per pupil, the educational level of teachers, and average teacher salary.
