Musical in Vernon Hills

Vernon Hills High School will present its winter musical, "Once Upon a Mattress," Feb. 19-21. Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. each night at the school, 145 Lakeview Parkway. The show is a comedic take on the fairy tale "The Princess and the Pea." Tickets are $5 for adults or $4 for students.

Celebrate Lincoln

Lake County Discovery Museum is celebrating the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln's birth with three special education programs. The first is "An Evening with President & Mrs. Lincoln" on Feb. 20. It chronicles an hour at the White House before the couple left for Ford's Theatre on the night he was assassinated. Cost is $8 per adult and $5 per child for Lake County residents. The cost for nonresidents is $11 per adult and $7 per child. Registration is required at www.lcfpd.org or (847) 968-3321. "Abraham Lincoln in Song" will be presented March 8; and "Living Like Lincoln" on April 5.

Wine about winter

"Let's Wine About Winter" MainStreet Libertyville's progressive wine tasting is 1 to 5 p.m. Feb. 21. Visitors can stroll from store to store for a different wine or refreshment and a different artist at each stop. The purchase of a $5 commemorative etched wine glass at the first stop serves as the ticket to two dozen participating locations. Call (847) 680-0336.

Park district open house

The Mundelein Park District and its Learning Center Preschool will hold their annual open house from 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 22. The event is free and all ages are invited. Teachers, tours and free refreshments will be available. The learning center is at 1016 Diamond Lake Road, between Route 45 and Routes 60/83 in Mundelein. Menards grand opening

The Long Grove's new Menards is having a special nine-day grand opening special starting Saturday, Feb. 14, at 2700 Lake Cook Road. Customers will get deals on merchandise, prize giveaways and in-store demonstrations. The home improvements store opened last month. The Long Grove store will be a replacement for a smaller Palatine store on Rand Road that will be closing down. The store will be the latest Menards to open in the Chicago area. On Nov. 18, Menards opened a store at 7435 Barrington Road in Hanover Park, which replaced a Hoffman Estates store that closed last year. In the spring, the Wisconsin-based chain expects to open another store in Chicago.
