Impeachment unites Illinois lawmakers

Jan. 9th, was Nixon's birthday. It is also the day an Illinois governor was impeached for the first time in nearly 200 years of state history. I participated in that historic event by casting a confident yes vote to impeach.

This impeachment is not a partisan exercise where members of one party apply a double-standard to the chief executive of the other party. Instead, the governor managed to unite House members - like most of the public we represent - to conclude he is no longer fit to govern.

Blagojevich refused to testify before the House Committee on Impeachment to rebut any of the allegations against him. In a noncriminal proceeding such as an impeachment inquiry, the refusal to testify can be held against him.

The Governor's abuse of power is so flagrant that my colleagues and I resorted to the ultimate legislative check and balance.

State Rep. Paul Froehlich
