Bison, Grens pull upsets

Sophomore Kelly Mahoney sank 2 free throws with 16 seconds left for the final points in Buffalo Grove's 48-47 Mid-Suburban East girls basketball win over Prospect at the Jean Walker Field House in Mount Prospect.

Sophomore Andrea DiPrima led the Bison with 13 points while junior Heather Nisbet added 12, including a pair of big 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.

Junior forward Stacey Lialios did not play for the Bison (9-16, 3-5) because of an ankle injury suffered in practice Thursday and is expected to be sidelined for a week.

Guard Kaitlin Hillner suffered an ankle sprain with six minutes to go in Friday's game and was taken to the hospital.

Prospect (17-6, 6-2) was led by Lexi Glennon (9 points) and Rachel Hunt (8).

Elk Grove 55, Hersey 52: Two free throws by junior Olivia Roback and one by senior Kristy Ottosen in the final 20 seconds broke a 52-52 tie and gave the host Grenadiers (11-11, 3-5) the MSL East triumph.

Hersey (16-8, 4-4) missed a 3-pointer near the final buzzer.

"Our kids felt pretty good about this win," said Elk Grove coach Ryan Kirkorsky. "We had a couple of kids step up and make some big free throws at the end."

Junior Ashley Capotosto stepped up with 20 points and 11 rebounds while Roback chipped in 13 points and 4 assists.

Ottosen finished with 6 points, 6 assists, 4 steals and 5 rebounds. Meaghan Amann added 8 points for the Grenadiers.

"Kristy was the difference in the game," Kirkorsky said.

Hersey was led by Megan Rogowski (18 points), Kelly Rogowski (15), Kristen Gierman (8) and Kathryn Korff (8).

Wheeling 61, Meadows 41: With 14 rebounds, Ashley Wilson reached 1,003 for her career as the Wildcats improved to 24-1 and clinched a tie for first in the MSL East with their 8-0 record, two games in front of runner-up Prospect with two to play.

The Purdue-bound Wilson (1,003 rebounds), who has scored more than 1,700 points, had 19 points Friday while junior guard Janelle Cannon tossed home a season-high 28 points with 7 rebounds, 7 steals and 5 assists.

Bianca Szafarowicz added 12 points for the Wildcats with a pair of rebounds and assists.

Rolling Meadows (8-16, 0-8), coming off its first homecourt win in two seasons, was led by Maddy Urban (14 points) and Kelly Zahorski (12).

Schaumburg 41, Palatine 32: Rachael Kahan (15 points) and Sarah McGinn (10) led the Saxons (7-17, 2-6) in the MSL West win.

Sophomore Alexis Bauer led Palatine (3-22, 0-8) with 12 points.

Maine W. 44, Glenbrook N. 30: Junior Sam Acosta scored 18 points and senior Shaina Yalda added 10 for the Warriors (13-12, 6-2) in the CSL North contest.

Juniors Megan O'Neill (8 rebounds) and Ellen Coogan (7) led the visiting Warriors on the boards.
