Man charged with attempted murder in Fox Lake stabbing

A judge set bond at $300,000 Monday for a McHenry man accused of trying to kill a female acquaintance during a weekend dispute outside a Fox Lake business.

Bill V. Canales, 41, faces charges of attempted murder and aggravated battery stemming from the incident late Friday night that left the bloodied victim, a 29-year-old Fox Lake woman, stumbling down Route 12 looking for help.

The woman remained hospitalized Monday at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge undergoing treatment for multiple stab wounds and other injuries. Doctors expect her to make a full recovery, McHenry County Sheriff's Sgt. Michael Cisner said.

"She was stabbed several times in the upper torso and there is evidence she was struck in the head with a shovel," Cisner said.

The sheriff's Apprehension Unit along with the U.S. Marshals Service captured Canales Sunday afternoon at a hotel near Grayslake. He was arrested without incident, Cisner said.

When arrested, Canales showed police stab wounds to his shoulder and thigh he said he suffered during the Friday night altercation, Cisner said. He was treated for those injuries before being transported to the McHenry County jail.

Investigators still are trying to determine what exactly led up to the altercation Friday night.

Cisner said the victim was driving Canales in her vehicle when they stopped outside his workplace in the 6800 block of State Park Road. An argument erupted, leading to the stabbing, after which Canales fled and the victim went looking for help along Route 12.

A passer-by spotted the woman, pulled over to assist her and called 911, Cisner said.

Investigators still are searching for the weapon used in the incident.

"The victim said it was a silver object," Cisner said. "It could have been a pair of scissors, a pen. We just don't know at this time."

Canales made a brief court appearance Monday morning at which a judge set his bond and assigned a public defender to his case. He is scheduled to return to court Feb. 2. If convicted of the attempted murder charge, Canales could face six to 30 years in prison.
