Viator rallies on road
This time the long trip had a happy ending for St. Viator's boys basketball team.
The Lions (10-6, 3-4) rallied from a 1-point halftime deficit and used 12-for-14 free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter for a 64-55 East Suburban Catholic Conference win Friday night at Joliet Catholic.
"We had to tighten up our defense again," said Viator coach Joe Majkowski of watching a 23-10 lead turn into a 28-27 deficit at intermission. "We had a tough time scoring and we didn't play good defense."
The Lions also had to overcome leading scorers Alan Aboona, who played only 11/2 minutes of the first half with foul trouble, and Richard McLoughlin being held to 9 points apiece.
Brendan King (17 points) and Bryce Hensley (16 points) picked up the slack. Viator, which lost 60-59 at Marist last Friday, had nine 3-pointers as Hensley hit three and King and K.J. Sherwood made two apiece.
"Brendan King had a great game, not just scoring, but he had a bunch of rebounds for us," Majkowski said. "He played a pretty good game and Bryce did, too."
Viator has a nonconference game at Northridge Prep at 7:30 p.m. today.
Deerfield 61, Maine West 46: Sebastian Stasiakiewicz scored 17 points and hit five 3s but it wasn't enough for Maine West (4-15, 2-4) in the Central Suburban North loss at Deerfield (7-9, 2-4).
Alex Samuelson and Tommy Solis added 11 points apiece for Maine West, which shot just 32 percent (18-for-56) from the field. Duje Dukan led Deerfield with 23 points.
Proviso East 46, Leyden 40: Leyden fell to 6-8 overall and 1-3 in the West Suburban Gold in the home loss to the Pirates (6-9, 3-3).
