Grant enforces traffic laws:

The Schaumburg Police Department completed the second of five enforcement periods of the Illinois Traffic Safety Division's IMAGE grant, from Dec. 19 through Jan. 4. There were 70 citations for speeding, eight citations for failure to wear a seat belt and 70 citations for other violations. Officers specifically targeted speeding violations, with an emphasis on passenger safety restraint violations and impaired driving violations. Officers were assigned to areas with a high rate of accidents and low compliance with speed laws. The goal of the grant to reduce traffic crash injuries and fatalities.

New fire engine dedicated

The Palatine Rural Fire Protection District will hold a dedication at noon Saturday, Jan. 17, for its new fire engine. During the ceremony, the new fire engine's water tank will be filled up using the hose from the old engine, which is being retired and will likely be sold. Refreshments will be served and the public is invited. The fire station is at Palatine and Ela roads in Inverness. For information, call (847) 991-8700.

Free 'King Corn' film showing

A free screening of the documentary "King Corn" - which takes a lighthearted look at modern farming from the field to industrial uses and to the table, as well as how corn products are used in many of the processed foods we consume - will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, at Barrington Area Library, 505 N. Northwest Hwy., Barrington. The League of Women Voters of the Barrington Area is sponsoring the event and will host a discussion following the film. No registration required.
