Cary Dist. 26 students to witness history in the making
History-making events are happening in Washington, D.C. and Springfield this winter, and some students from Cary School District 26 will get to be a part of it. The Cary 26 Education Foundation is once again sponsoring trips to both cities for Cary Junior High students.
Eighth-graders will be in D.C. over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend as that city starts the historic inaugural celebration of Barack Obama. "It's a great opportunity for Cary students to stand and see where so many inaugural events are taking place. day, Some hopefully, they'll look back and remember the D.C. experience as one of their life's highlights," said Jon Diersen, a junior high history teacher and one of the chaperones going on the trip.
Although the proceedings in Springfield are much more serious, it is still history in the making and a chance for the seventh graders to witness first hand the judicial and legislative process. If the projected timeline of events is accurate, the Springfield trip over President's Day weekend should fall during the official proceedings regarding the governor's office.
"We're proud to be in our fourth year of sponsoring these trips. They offer a unique opportunity to enrich and extend the children's academic experiences in a totally fun setting," said Chris Spoerl, president of the Cary 26 Education Foundation. "It's much more interesting for the kids to see history than to just read about it."
Eighth-graders will have plenty of sightseeing to do in D.C. including stops at the Library of Congress, Capitol Building, Smithsonian, and several of the War Memorials, to name just a few. The Springfield trip will include the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, Lincoln's Tomb, new and old state capitol buildings, plus several war memorials.
The Cary 26 Education Foundation is a nonprofit organization with an overall mission of enriching and extending the quality of education for District 26 students. The foundation relies entirely on generous contributions to support enrichment programs and carry on its mission.
