Horse-drawn trolley at Algonquin mall

Maybe shopping has you exhausted. Or maybe you're just looking for a little "holly jolly" lift this season.

Either way, you might want to take a ride on Algonquin Commons' horse-drawn trolley as you do your Christmas shopping this year.

Each weekend from 2 to 6 p.m., the festively decorated trolley carries weary shoppers from one end of the mall to the next, giving them a little Christmas spirit lift.

It is free to board the trolley, and you can exit near any store that's next on your list.

The folks at Algonquin Commons say it has been quite popular this season with shoppers carrying loads of bags and with those looking to escape walking in the cold as they head to their next destination.

It's also just a fun way to get into the Christmas spirit for the whole family, and something unique for the kids to try when they're burned out from following you from store to store.

As you're driving by on the trolley, or once you get off to shop, you're also likely to run into Christmas carolers strolling the mall.

Also from 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, the carolers will be at the mall, roaming from store to store, spreading Christmas cheer with their voices.

Trading Spaces: First it was at the Huntley Outlet Mall. Then it moved to the Randall Road corridor. Then it moved back to Huntley.

Now Carter's children's clothing store is open once again along Randall Road in the Algonquin Commons shopping center.

Breakfast with the big guy: Govnor's Public House in Lake in the Hills is sponsoring its annual Breakfast with Santa on Sunday, Dec. 14.

The setting is small, with only 40 people for each of the three seatings -- 9 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. At the event you'll get to brunch on their buffet and then visit with Santa himself. The cost is $12.99 for adults, $7.99 for ages 5 and older and $4.99 for ages 4 and younger.

Reservations are required. For information call (847) 658-4700.
