CL South blitzes Elgin

It was total domination.

Shooting 64 percent from the field and dishing out 20 assists, Crystal Lake South was able to cruise by Elgin 62-37 in a nonconference girls basketball game held at Gator Alley Thursday night.

"A lot of these girls have played together for three years and they don't care who scores," said South coach Kyle McCaughn. "They are very unselfish. We got a lot of easy shots as our offense fed off our defense."

Making 25-of-39 shots from the field for the game, the Gators (5-2) started fast with Caitlin Mize scoring 3 baskets and Carly Juliano canning 2 shots from the outside. South made its first 5 shots and led 10-2 with 4:55 remaining in the opening quarter.

Crystal Lake South didn't let its foot off the pedal and led 18-7 after 8 minutes. The Gators made 8-of-12 shots from the floor for 66 percent in opening up an 11-point lead.

South, which held a 32-17 lead at halftime, blitzed the Maroons in the third quarter. Forcing Elgin (2-4) into 6 turnovers, the Gators outscored the Maroons 21-2 during the first 6 minutes of the third quarter. Connecting on 10-of-12 shots from the field for 83 percent, the Gators pulled away to a 34-point 53-19 advantage. Mize had 7 points, Juliano scored 5 points and Jenny Hanrahan and Katie Burton tallied 4 points each as the Gators seized control of the contest.

Mize led the Gators with 16 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocked shots.

"The seniors have played together for four years and we have a sense of where everybody is on the floor," said Mize. "We don't care who scores. The open player gets the ball."

Juliano added 13 points with 5 assists while Burton scored 8 with 5 assists.

Brandi Hernandez scored 10 for Elgin, all in the fourth quarter.

"We were not ready to play and you can't do that against a team as good as they are," said Elgin coach Angie Hudson. "They killed us with the backdoor cuts. They got way too many easy shots."
