D-C shows talented lineup

Dundee-Crown wrestling coach Al Zinke knows he has plenty of talent up and down the weight classes.

That talent was evident Thursday night.

The Chargers won all but two matches, including eight by pin, in a 65-10 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division dual meet against Jacobs in Algonquin.

"It's not just (one or two kids), it's the balance of this team" Zinke said. "Nobody works as hard as our kids. We do two-a-days. We're going back tonight, not to go home, but to get a workout in."

After a forfeit by the Golden Eagles at 103 pounds, Jacobs' Aaron Ryan had eight takedowns against Travell Rounds to score a 16-7 major decision and make the team score 6-4 in favor of D-C.

The Chargers then won the next nine matches, taking a 54-4 lead.

Frank Abitua dominated Collin Zaio at 119 pounds, winning by technical fall 4 seconds into the second period. Jeremy Lee had a major decision victory, 12-4, over Joey Diehl at 125. Jermaine Lee (130), Josh Lee (135), Alex Laverd (140), Cody Muscat (145), Jack Lewis (160) and Cody Churkey (171) all won by fall for the Chargers during their nine-match streak. At 152, Tim Brennan held on for an 8-7 decision over Chris Zaio.

Tom Newman (215) and Ron Dumas (heavyweight) also earned wins by fall for D-C.

"What was great to see was the pins didn't come right away," Zinke said. "They came after periods of work. So we were able to do things and see that progress take place."

The Golden Eagles' other victory came at 189 pounds from Justin Kozak. Kozak and the Chargers' Tim Stan were tied 10-10 entering the third period. Stan started down in the final period and looked as if he might earn an escape point and two points for a reversal when Kozak knocked Stan on his back and earned the pin in 4:32.

"We had some matches that didn't quite go our way," Golden Eagles coach Todd Rader said. "Our guys haven't been working as long as they have, about three weeks. No excuses though."
