Sleepy Hollow Service Club: The Sleepy Hollow Service Club invites all villagers to kick off the holiday season - the mall sales before Thanksgiving don't count! We will gather from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6 at Sabatino Park to enjoy hot cocoa and neighborly fun while the park flagpole and the Elementary School Circle-of-Cheer Christmas trees are lit. One lucky person will get to flip the power switch to light the trees. Will it be you?

Henpeck HCE: Food, culture and climate of Belgium were the focus of the lesson when members of the Henpeck Unit of Kane County Association for Home and Cummunity Education met on Nov. 11, at the home of Dorothy Murry on Widmayer Road in Hampshire.

Seven members and two guests, Marian June and Irene McNamara, answered roll call with a current movie they would recommend for the holiday season. "Australia" and "The Secret Life of Bees" were suggested.

The business meeting was preceded by a potluck luncheon of Belgian foods prepared by members from recipes provided in a handout. Dishes included: Hearty Winter Vegetable Soup, Belgian Roast in a Crock Pot, Spinach Mashed Potatoes, Warm Green Bean and Potato Salad from Liege, Red Cabbage (Rodekoolsla),Belgian Applesauce Cake, Crunchy Pumpkin Pie, Pumpkin Pudding Pie and Belgian Beer.

Irene McNamara, Kane County International Directer, presented the lesson on Belgian culture, climate and customs. Several examples of handmade Belgin lace, along with the loom used in making the lace, were highlighted in the presentation.

Donations of cash and food were collected for the Hampshire/Burlington Food Pantry.

The next meeting of the Henpeck Unit will be the Unit Christmas Party on Dec. 9 at Niko's Grill and Pub in Huntley. As previously decided, cash donations will be collected for the Hampshire/Burlington Food Pantry in lieu of a Christmas gift exchange. Golden K Kiwanis: The Elgin Golden K Kiwanis will hold its next meeting at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3 at St. Joseph Hospital. Bonnie Emberton will give a tour of the new addition to the hospital. For additional information, call (847) 741-7176.

Elgin Junior Woman's Club: Elgin Junior Woman's Club is holding a general meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 2. at Al's Cafe & Creamery. Dinner will start at 6:30 p.m. with meeting after dinner. Boy Scouts: Boy Scout Troop 43 has meetings from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays at Grace Baptist Church, 2750 Helm Road, Carpentersville. Boy Scouts is a year-round program for boys ages 11 to 18. Boy Scouting is a program of fun outdoor activities, peer group leadership opportunities and a personal exploration of career, hobby and special interests, all designed to achieve the BSA's objectives of strengthening character, personal fitness, life saving skills and good citizenship. Fox Valley Beaux Arts: Fox Valley Beaux Arts recently celebrated 25 years in service to the arts with its annual luncheon and style show, "A Jubilee of Fashions." The festive event was held at the Elgin Country Club with more than 100 women enjoying the autumn day. The cocktail hour began with a silent auction of unique items and raffling of themed baskets, while pianist Murna Hansemann provided delightful music.

Before lunch, Marge Haefliger, president, welcomed members and guests and the invocation was given by Dona Jones. Mary Ellen Kanies Beckmann, first vice president, introduced local guest artist, Suzanne Poursine Massion. Massion discussed her paintings of Elgin architecture and downtown scenes which were displayed and auctioned at the luncheon.

After lunch, second Vice President Florence Ostdick introduced Barb Riebe, commentator from Coldwater Creek-Geneva Commons. The exciting Coldwater Creek fashions were modeled by members and friends of Beaux Arts. Women admiring the varied styles in the show included Chris Burris, Judy Cheetham, Sue Heider, Cheryl Karner, Pat Anderson, Sandy Haggard, Fran Mitchell, Laila Fox, Janine Kirkland, Joyce Price, Chrisanne Smith and Coral Reinert.

Proceeds from this annual Beaux Arts luncheon and style show provide scholarships for artistically talented senior high school students in the area.

NARFE: National Active and Retired Federal Employees of the Greater Fox Valley Chapter 2181 will gather for a holiday luncheon at noon Tuesday Dec. 9 at Grand Victoria Casino

Elgin Woman's Club: The next Elgin Woman's Club meeting and program will be held at 11:30 a.m. Dec. 2 at the Holiday Inn, 495 Airport Road, Elgin.

Hosted by the Arts/Home Life Department, the program will feature a presentation by local artist Warren Mogler, who will display and discuss his drawings of local landmarks and homes. Mogler is a lifelong resident of Elgin and started drawing with pen and ink in 1960. His hand renderings include 38 points of interest in Elgin, including fire stations and the Walton Island flag.

Committee chairman for the December meeting is Lou Mutter, assisted by Audrey Gilbert and Betty Wear. Members are also reminded to bring items to be given to the Community Crisis Center of Elgin and baked goods for the annual holiday Bake Sale.

Members are asked to make reservations no later than Friday, Nov. 28, by calling the EWC hotline at (847) 622-3614. The luncheon meeting and program costs $13 and can be paid by check at the door the day of the meeting.

EWC members will sell nuts in the main lobby of Sherman Hospital on Wednesday, Dec. 3. Profits from the sales will go toward scholarships for students from area high schools.

In addition to raising funds for student scholarships, members serve as readers in local schools, volunteer in hospitals and other agencies throughout the Elgin area and are active in recycling, conservation, women's health, international affairs and other projects.

Kane County Audubon Society: The public is invited to programs and activities of the Kane County Audubon Society.

On Saturday, Dec. 6, enjoy a field trip to Nelson Lake. The first Saturday of each month Kane County Audubon invites the public to join them as they view the birds of Nelson Lake. Meet at 8 am. in the parking lot by the silo, which is west of Nelson Lake Rd. about three-quarter mile south of Main Street, and about 2 miles west of Randall Road in Batavia. Kane County Audubon is the local chapter of the Illinois Audubon Society and meets at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday each month, September through May. Meetings are held in the orientation room, (the Barn), at Peck Farm in Geneva.

Field trips, bird walks, and nature hikes are scheduled throughout the year and on meeting nights during June, July and August.

Elgin VFW: The Watch City VFW Post 1307 in Elgin is holding its annual Christmas Party on Saturday, Dec. 6 and is open to the public. Tickets are $20 in advance available at the post or $25 at the door and include a buffet dinner. Entertainment will be provided by Patsy Cline stylist Alice Loftus, and Neil Diamond stylist Mike Palmisano. Doors open at 6 p.m. with a cash bar, dinner at 7 p.m. and entertainment from 8 to 11 p.m. Seating is first come, first served, and there will be raffles and dancing. Kiwanis Club: The Kiwanis Club of Elgin meets at noon each Tuesday at The Hickory Stick Bar & Grille Restaurant, 875 Sports Way, Elgin, located at the Highlands of Elgin's Golf Course. The Kiwanis Club of Elgin received its charter on March 9, 1920. It is estimated that nearly $500,000 has been donated by the club over the last 87 years to more than 30 deserving organizations in Elgin and South Elgin, primarily those serving children.
