Fremd outlasts Jacobs

Jacobs girls basketball coach coach Ed Haugens couldn't hide his disgust.

"This is the worst effort I have gotten from my teams in 12 years of coaching," said Haugens. "I coached middle school and those teams didn't play this bad. We had too many unforced turnovers. We didn't use our height advantage and we played selfishly. We handle pressure every day in practice and we couldn't handle it tonight. It was ridiculous."

Haugens displayed his anger after a lackluster effort in a 46-35 loss to Fremd in the final game of the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament Wednesday.

The Golden Eagles (2-2) actually started fast getting off to a 6-0 lead. Baskets by Hailey Cnota, Katy Cook and Maria Tamburrino gave the Golden Eagles a 6-point lead with 5:22 left in the initial quarter.

After a slow start, Fremd (4-0) seized control of the game and led 30-20 after a 3-pointer by Taylor Glassmann with 3:44 left in the third quarter. The Golden Eagles showed a pulse and scored 7 straight points to make the score 30-27 after a 3-point play by Cook with 1:03 left in the quarter. Jacobs couldn't get any closer.

The Vikings iced the game in the fourth quarter, making 9-of-12 from the line. Glassman, who led Fremd with 15, was 4-of-4 from the line in the final quarter.

Katie Hetzner added 13 for the Vikes while Gianna Abruzzo scored 12.

"I thought we played well the last three-and-a-half quarters," said Fremd coach Dave Yates. "We have a young team and we hit the open shots when we had them. I am pleased. I thought we played a very mature game."

Jacobs, which committed 34 turnovers, was led by Tamburrino with 10 points.
