Briefs: Triangle Park updated
Renovations are complete at Wheaton's Triangle Park, 1100 Crescent St. Thanks to a $30,000 legislative grant from the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, the park received a new playground that's up-to-date with new safety standards. The playground surface is spongy, which makes falls softer and less harmful, and the equipment includes features for both preschool and school-age children.
Train quiet zone starts Dec. 1
As of Dec. 1, trains traveling along the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railroad will be required to comply with a new quiet zone restriction from 111th Street in Naperville to Batavia Road in Warrenville. The new designation is expected to significantly reduce the frequency of train horns through this stretch of railroad. Bicyclists and pedestrians are reminded to stop, look and listen at all rail crossings.
Foundation receives cash
The DuPage Community Foundation received a $2.12 million grant for its Communityworks initiative and to aid in long-term capacity building. It's the single largest grant the foundation has ever received and will go to these programs: Communityworks Endowment Fund, $1 million; Administrative Endowment Fund, $1 million; and operating support for the next three years, $120,000. In addition to the grant, GVF will match new and increased gifts up to $2 million.
Flood relief on way
More flood relief is on the way for the area near the 500 block of South Finley Road in Lombard. The village board has authorized the purchase of a residential property at 513 S. Finley Road for $199,000 to expand the existing detention area. The residence on the property will be razed, likely in the spring, once the police and fire departments use the vacant structure for training, officials said.
Holiday assistance plan
Applications for assistance from Carol Stream's Christmas Sharing program will be accepted through Dec. 5.
