Briefs: Library gets new director

The Vernon Area Public Library District has a new director. Cynthia Fuerst has been hired to lead the Lincolnshire-area district. Fuels will start Jan. 5 and replace Allen Meyer, who died in June. Fuerst has directed the Kankakee Public Library for the past 13 years. She's also worked with the Homewood and Matteson libraries.

District 103 to continue full-day kindergarten

Lincolnshire-Prairie View District 103 has approved a plan to continue its full-day kindergarten program to the 2009-10 school year. The district offered a full-day option for the first time this school year. The district plans to replicate the program next year, offering a maximum of six sections of full day and a minimum one section of half-day kindergarten. Each class will feature 18 to 20 students, and the tuition to parents who wish to enroll in full-day kindergarten will be $3,200 to implement the program. A kindergarten orientation will be planned in early December followed by registration.

Mundelein dinner sold out, concert tickets available

The Mundelein High School Choral Department Spotlight Dinner set for Friday is sold out. However, tickets are available to join the 8:30 p.m. concert where the Mundelein Sound, Lights and SoundFX will perform. Those tickets cost $10 and will be available at the door and on the school's Web site mundeleinmustangs.com. People with concert-only tickets can bid during the silent auction that begins at 6 p.m.

Super Jake passes $1 million mark

The Super Jake Foundation has surpassed raising $1 million dollars after holding its fourth annual Super Jake & Friends Heroes Bash Nov. 8. More than 200 people dressed as superheroes, including Batman, Batgirl, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Captain America, The Hulk, Mighty Mouse and the Justice League, turned out to support the cause. Ann and Matt Widman of Gurnee created the foundation three years ago after the death of their son, Jake who battled neuroblastoma, a form of pediatric cancer. The foundation raises money to research pediatric cancer and support children with cancer and their families. Round Lake holds month long food drive:

Round Lake is holding a food drive through November to benefit local food pantries. Drop nonperishable donations off at the Round Lake Village Hall, the Round Lake Police and Public Works building off Townline Road or at First American Bank at Route 60 and Cedar Lake Road.
