SAA to host large cheer event

The Schaumburg Athletic Association's cheer program is preparing to host the largest cheer competition in Northern Illinois on Sunday, Nov. 9 at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates. The Schaumburg Spirit Spectacular will welcome more than 175 cheer teams comprising 3,500 participants that day. The teams, ages kindergarten through eighth grade, consist of recreational, all-star and parochial cheer squads. The event has been designated as a qualifying event for the Illinois State Championship Dec. 13, also at the Sears Centre.

Falcon Park breaks ground

The Palatine Park District will hold a groundbreaking ceremony at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, to start construction on Falcon Park Recreation Center. The site of the future facility, at 2010 N. Coach Road, is near the corner of Rand and Old Hicks roads. The $12.5 million, 49,200-square-foot building will include an indoor turf field, a gymnasium, a track and a multipurpose room.

Neighborhood watch

Des Plaines police are holding three Neighborhood Watch meetings this week to help get the word out about steps to be safe during the holiday season. The meetings will feature Chief Jim Prandini, Traffic Unit Commander Tim Veit, Crime Prevention Specialist Tara Goble and two officers who coordinate the program. The meetings will be at 6 p.m. today, Nov. 3, in Room 15 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, 1263 Prospect Ave.; 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, at Friendship Park Conservatory, 395 W. Algonquin Road; and 7 p.m. Thursday at Room 101 in City Hall, 1420 Miner St. Call (847) 391-5400 for information.

RSVP for flu clinic today

Today, Nov. 3, is the last day to register for a flu clinic that Schaumburg Township Senior Services is offering for adults 18 and older. The clinic is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, at Schaumburg Township Hall, 1 Illinois Blvd. in Hoffman Estates. Appointments are required and can be made by calling (847) 884-0030. Medicare will be billed for those on Medicare Part B. There is no charge for those on Medicaid, but remember to bring your Medicaid Medical card. For all others, the cost is $20.
