Schaumburg student interns at White House
A longtime fascination with politics and a dedication to public service helped Schaumburg native and Valparaiso University senior Andrew Mayer win one of 100 spots in the White House internship program this past summer.
Over the summer, Mayer worked in the Office of Records Management at the White House, where he helped maintain various databases and documents, as well as review correspondence being sent from the White House.
Meyer also attended a speaker series, including Joshua Bolton, White House Chief of staff; Dana Perino, White House press secretary; and Jim Nussle, director of the Office of Management and Budget.
• The Kiwanis Club of Streamwood announced the following 2008-09 officers and directors: Cathy Tampir was retired as the cub's president. She will stay on the board and serve as immediate past president. Patty McKernan assumed the role of club president. Matt Armstrong became the president-elect and Linda Frye-Danner will serve as vice president. Mike Buckley continues as secretary and Terri Johnson is the club treasurer. The club's board of directors consists of Ray Begy, Pat Hogan, Aneta Lysek and Sandy Stewart.
Jay Schwarzman received the Kiwanian of the Year award and the club is nominating him for the Streamwood Chamber's Volunteer of the Year award. Schwarzman has gone above an beyond the call of duty may times in serving through Kiwanis this past year.
• Des Plaines resident Janet Lundblad, chaplain at Westlake Hospital in Melrose Park, received the hospital's Quarterly Leader Award based on nominations solicited form hospital staff. Lundblad provides counseling and support to families and patients in need. She is also the self-appointed manager of the clothes closet and co-chairs the community cares committee.
• Ten-year-old Shaeleigh Voitl of Bartlett won Mundelein High School's Mundelein Idol contest, beating 30 other competitors for the title, trophy and $400 prize. The contest was sponsored by the Mundelein Sound and Light show choirs.
