Jacobs savors big victory over rival
One win usually does not make a football team's season.
This one just might for Jacobs.
The Golden Eagles ended a seven-game losing streak Friday night by beating District 300 rival Dundee-Crown, 21-7 on a muddy and wet Jacobs Athletic Field.
"We talked about giving the seniors a win to finish out the season and giving the juniors a building block for next season," Jacobs junior running back Dale Cook said.
The start of the game was delayed an hour and 10 minutes because of lightning, but when the teams finally got on the field, the rivalry turned a game with no playoff implications into a slugfest.
The Chargers (3-6, 0-5 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division) opened the scoring with 8 seconds left in the first half. Logan Kissack hit Jeff Beck for a 14-yard score across the middle to cap a 13-play, 85-yard drive. Running back Ian Salvatini had 66 yards rushing on the drive.
Jacobs (2-7, 1-4) answered on the second play from scrimmage of the third quarter. Senior running back Adam Dybeck ran right, broke several tackles, cut back to the left and outran the rest of the Chargers' defense for a 60-yard touchdown as the Golden Eagles tied the game at 7-7 just 1:08 into the second half.
With under 3 minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Chargers fumbled, one of six in the game, and Jacobs recovered on D-C's 24-yard line. Cook gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good 4 plays later on a 19-yard run with 14 seconds left in the third.
D-C fumbled again on the second play of its next possession, giving the ball to Jacobs on the 7. After Cook got down to the 1, quarterback Alec Starr plunged in for a score with 11:15 remaining in the game.
Dybeck finished with 106 yards rushing on 7 carries. Cook added 73 yards on 13 attempts.
Salvatini rushed for 164 yards, 127 in the first half. Kissack was 12 of 25 for 94 yards as D-C lost its fifth consecutive game and failed to win four games for the 10th consecutive season.
