Pretty in pink

There's nothing vain about two beauty treatments being offered this month at six local salons.

Quite possibly, these luxuries could be saving lives.

As part of national Breast Cancer Awareness Month, salons in Addison, Roselle, and Elk Grove Village have partnered with Addison Trail's "Go Pink or Go Home" campaign to offer a pink hair extension or a pink highlight to raise money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a foundation that funds breast cancer research.

Earlier this month Addison Trail's orchesis, blazettes, cheerleaders and Latinas Accomplishing Dreams, Independence, Empowerment and Success - LADIES - kicked off their "Go Pink or Go Home" campaign when high school staff members had pink extensions or highlights added to their hair during lunch periods. Even principal Scott Helton embraced the peroxide and is still sporting a pink streak in his mane.

But teens and their teachers aren't the only ones who can help. Through the end of October, area residents can make appointments for these local salons to add one pink extension or single highlight for $10: U & Style on 101 E. Lake St. and 53 W. Lake St., both in Addison; Studio Max, 1258 Lake St., Roselle; Couture Salon, 1449 W. Lake St., Addison; Illusions, 1053 Rohlwing Road, Elk Grove Village; Sensational Beauty Salon, 329 N. Addison Road, Addison.

Dimitria Siliras, who co-owns Couture Salon with her sister, Eva Soumakis, said joining "Go Pink or Go Home" seemed like a great way have fun with clients and support a cause that is near to her family's heart - Soumakis' mother-in-law is a 10-year breast cancer survivor.

Staff members at all the salons donate their time for the pink services, and $5 from each purchase benefits the Komen foundation while the remaining money pays for supplies.

For details or to purchase vouchers for extensions and highlights, call Enza DiFranco at Addison Trail High School at (630) 458-4541 or visit your nearest participating salon.
