Briefs: Rail service disrupted

The Metra Union Pacific West Line was shut down for about 30 minutes Wednesday morning after being halted due to police activity in Chicago, Metra officials said. Some trains on the west line which runs from Chicago to Elburn, including stops in West Chicago, Wheaton and Geneva, ran about 15 minutes behind schedule. Officials said the police activity took place on the train tracks between Kedzie and Keeler avenues in Chicago. However, the incident didn't directly involve Metra trains, officials said. The trains were back on schedule by 10 a.m.

Grand jury returns indictments

A DuPage County grand jury has returned several felony indictments, including one alleging a man fraudulently collected donations in Wheaton while claiming to work for a group that helps find missing children, according to court records released Wednesday. An arrest warrant has been issued for Terrance D. Godfrey, 36, of Wheaton, on charges of false impersonation and forgery. Prosecutors allege he collected donations July 28 on behalf of a bogus missing children's group while also posing as a Wheaton police employee. In other indictments: Doug A. Gontz, 44, Willowbrook, is charged with 11 counts of child pornography and 21-year-old Derrick Williams of South Holland is facing disorderly conduct charges on suspicion he made a false bomb threat Sept. 17 at Universal Technical Institute in Glendale Heights.

Lisle flood relief

Lisle residents and business owners who have been affected by the flooding following the rainfalls of Sept. 12-14 now can apply for federal assistance. To begin the disaster application process, residents and business owners should first register online at www.fema.gov or by calling (800) 621-FEMA (3362) or (800) 462-7585 (TTY) for the hearing and speech impaired. A list of assistance programs being offered is available on the village of Lisle Web site.

Benefit lunch planned

A benefit lunch is being held at Outback Steakhouse from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, and Oct. 17 in Villa Park. The $20 per lunch fee will be donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association to help fund research for Freidreich's Ataxia. The eatery is located at 100-28 E. Roosevelt Road. Glenbard counselor wins award

Glenbard South High School counselor Chuck Manson was a recipient of the 2008 Yale Counseling Award, sponsored by the Yale University office of undergraduate admissions. The award recognizes counselors from around the world who have inspired and supported their students to achieve at high levels. Glenbard South alumna Durga Thakral nominated Manson, citing him as an important educator who made a difference in her life.

IMSA accepting applications

Applications for the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy class of 2012 are available online at imsa.edu/admissions. Talented Illinois students enrolled in the equivalent of a ninth grade program are eligible for consideration to the three-year (grades 10-12) advanced college preparatory program. Students live on campus. Tuition and most room and board expenses are provided by state funds. Written applications must be postmarked no later than March 1, 2009. Students may obtain the applications online or contact their high school guidance counselor or IMSA's admissions office at (630) 907-5028.
