Kane County Audubon Society: The public is invited to programs and activities of the Kane County Audubon Society.

• On Saturday, Oct. 4, take a field trip at 8 a.m. to Nelson Lake, Dick Young Forest Preserve. On the first Saturday of each month Kane County Audubon invites the public to join them as they view the birds at Nelson Lake. This month, they will look for fall migrants and new arrivals. Meet in the parking lot by the silo, which is on the west side of Nelson Lake Road, about three-quarter mile south of Main Street and 2 miles west of Randall Road in Batavia. • On Wednesday, Oct. 8, join in Meeting Night at 6 p.m. at Peck Farm located at Peck and Kaneville roads, about half-mile west of Randall Road in Geneva. The program will be on "Bird Research in our Area of Illinois." The speakers will be Judy Pollock, director of Bird Conservation for Audubon Chicago, and Joe Suchecki, steward and bird monitor at Springbrook Prairie. Kane County Audubon is the local chapter of the Illinois Audubon Society and meets at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday each month, September through May. Meetings are held in the orientation room, (the Barn), at Peck Farm in Geneva.

Field trips, bird walks, and nature hikes are scheduled throughout the year and on meeting nights during June, July and August.

League of Women Voters: Candidates vying for the 14th Congressional seat will be featured in a League of Women Voters candidate forum at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5 in St. Charles. The public is invited to attend the nonpartisan event in which incumbent Democratic Congressman Bill Foster and his Republican opponent, Jim Oberweis, will present their views. The forum will be held at the Norris Cultural Arts Center, 1040 Dunham Road, St. Charles.

The forum is sponsored by the Leagues of Geneva-St. Charles, Batavia, and Elgin in cooperation with the Daily Herald, Beacon News, and Kane County Chronicle. Within a moderated format, a panel of reporters will direct questions to the candidates, followed by questions from the audience. At the end of the forum the audience will be invited to meet informally with the candidates.

Elgin Lions Club: The Elgin Lions Club will have their membership dinner meeting at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7 at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites, 495 Airport Road in Elgin. Elgin Genealogical Society: The Elgin Genealogical Society will meet at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7 in the first-floor meeting rooms of the Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave. in Elgin. The program will be an abbreviated version of a DVD presentation of "Forensic Genealogy Lessons for your Own Family History" by Sharon Sergeant presented at the 2008 Massachusetts Genealogical Council Annual Seminar. Members are asked to bring stories and/or examples of family stories either verified or refuted through genealogical research to share and discuss at this meeting. Elgin Woman's Club: The next Elgin Woman's Club luncheon meeting and program will be Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the Holiday Inn, 495 Airport Road, Elgin. The business meeting will begin at 11:30 a.m., with lunch served at noon. Hosted by the Conservation Department, the program will feature a presentation on climate change solutions by Sandy Kaptain, co-chair of Slow Global Warming, an Elgin organization formed a year and a half ago.

Along with Kaptain, Slow Global Warming board members Sigi Psimenos and Kathy Haer will give a panel discussion on what each person can do to reduce global warming and slow climate change. Time will be allotted for questions and answers.

Cheryl Lee is chairman for the October meeting, assisted by committee members Virginia Madison, Pat Sjurseth and Marguerite Tabbert. Members are asked to make reservations no later than Friday, Oct. 3, by calling the EWC hotline at (847) 622-3614. The luncheon meeting and program costs $13 and can be paid by check at the door the day of the meeting.

Fox Valley Bicycle & Ski Club: Club meetings are at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month at the Batavia Public Library, Route 31 and Wilson Street in Batavia. For information, visit www.fvbsc.org. The social hour will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 8 with the program at 7:30 p.m. A discussion of business matters will be at 8 p.m.

Ed Barsotti, executive director of the League of Illinois Bicyclists, will provide an update on what towns in the Fox Valley and beyond are doing to provide bicycle paths and to promote safe bicycling in the area.

McHenry County AARP: The McHenry County Chapter of AARP will meet at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9 at the Fountains of Crystal Lake on Route 31 one mile north of Route 176. Philoptochos Society: The Philoptochos Society of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church will present "Step Up ... For Life" Benefit Luncheon and Festival of Tables. Taking place at 11 a.m. Oct. 11 in Elgin, this charitable event will benefit children afflicted with cancer through our direct support of Children's Oncology Services Inc. and St. Iakovos Retreat Center.

Tickets are $44 and include a gourmet lunch.

American Association of University Women, Huntley Area Branch: NOTE: date change. The Huntley Area Branch of the American Association of University Women invites the public to attend "Tea With Eleanor," a birthday luncheon and silent auction honoring first lady Eleanor Roosevelt, from noon to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15 at the Pinecrest Golf Club restaurant, 11220 Algonquin Road.

The event includes an Eleanor-era "tea party" lunch buffet of soups, salads, sandwiches, and scrumptious desserts, plus a silent auction of gifts, handmade items, and 1940s-50s collectibles.

Luncheon tickets are $28 for adults and students ages 12 and older. Those who prefer a little tee-time to teatime may choose to "Tee Off With Eleanor" with a 2-hour golf pass for $18 and a golfer's sandwich lunch for $10. Golf passes can be used between noon and 5 p.m., so those attending the luncheon also may golf afterward.

All profits will benefit the Huntley branch's local public service programming and AAUW's national Eleanor Roosevelt Fund, which supports research in equity and education for women and girls.

Reservations are recommended; a limited number of tickets will be available at the door. Silent auction prizes such as gift baskets and certificates, craft items or Eleanor-era collectibles, are needed.

Fox Valley Rocketeers: The Fox Valley Rocketeers, a local club of model rocketry enthusiasts, is hosting its October Rocket Launch from 1 to 5 p.m. Oct. 12 at a farm field at 505 Menge Road, Marengo, roughly at the intersection of Menge and Bauman roads.

The launch theme is "Two for the Road," multi-stage rockets. Rocket fliers are welcome to come and fly low- and mid-power rockets, and to attend the club meeting, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6 at the Woodstock Public Library, 414 W. Signal Hill DAR: Signal Hill Daughters of the American Revolution will hold a Tri Chapter meeting Friday, Oct. 17. The Kishwaukee Trail chapter and Eli Skinner chapter will join with Signal Hill in welcoming the State Regent Betty Hartley Ford, to a luncheon at Makray Memorial Golf Club, 1010 S. Northwest Hwy. (Route 14), Barrington. The chapter will hold a short business meeting at 10:30 a.m., followed by 11 a.m. receiving line (white gloves required) for the guest. A buffet luncheon will be served at noon, followed by the program "Exhilarating, Energizing and Enthusiasm" presented by the state regent. Reservations due by Tuesday, Oct. 7.
