Hampshire earns Big Northern title
The Hampshire girls golf team may not have won the battle Wednesday, but the Whip-Purs did win the war.
Hampshire also attained a goal - to break 380 in an 18-hole tournament - but the Whips' 371 wasn't good enough to get past Rockford Lutheran in the Big Northern Conference tournament at Timber Pointe in Poplar Grove.
Lutheran shot a 364 to win the tournament, but Hampshire won the overall conference title by virtue of coming into Wednesday's action with a perfect 8-0 mark in league duals.
"That's why you play the eight matches in conference play," said Hampshire coach Sue Ellett. "I thought our kids battled the elements really well today."
Sophomore Taylor Ellett finished third individually for the Whips, shooting an 85. Her freshman sister Connie was right behind with an 86. Lutheran took the top two spots as the Crusaders' Cynthia Bounleutay won the tournament with an 81 and Lizzy Blomgrown was second with an 83.
Hampshire's Grace Jakubowski (7th, 99) and Tina Tuminaro (tie for 10th, 101) also earned all-conference honors.
"It was a good challenge for us to play on a tough course in adverse conditions," Sue Ellett said. "I'm very proud of the kids and we're right where we want to be heading into regionals."
Burlington Central finished third in Wednesday's meet, shooting a 424. The Rockets' Taylor Colby (7th, 97) and Jordan Maisto (7th, 99) each earned all-conference honors.
Hampshire and BC will each play in the Class AA Moline regional next Wednesday.
FVC meet: The Crystal Lake co-cop won the Fox Valley Conference tournament, but Prairie Ridge's Allison Holly shot an 86 to capture medalist honors. PR finished second, Jacobs was third, McHenry fourth and Huntley fifth.
Rosary d. St. Edward: Brittania Schreurs had a 46 to lead St. Edward, but the Green Wave fell 183-201 in this Suburban Catholic Conference match at Villa Olivia.
